9" ???
I recently bought a Nova drag car w a 9" RE in it. Its missing the center section I need to replace it , preferably w 3:50 -3:89 geared chunk
The RE has custom length Moser 35 spline axles, which I want to keep. Can I or should I ??
A. Swap out the side gears for 35 splined ones, (As IF I knew where to find them )
B. As was suggested by him have the Moser axles resplined for 31 splines
and get a 31 spline truck chunk.
I cannot just pop open the check book and start writing here. So we're talking LOOOOOW Budget here. I should also make it clear about the cars intended use. The car in returning to the street w only a couple actual drag racing grudge nights plus a few runs at a local strips cruise weekend (probably only six Qtr runs, the whole summer) + will have a moderate BBC /T400 and street tires (Sportsman I's)

Probably not going to be many low budget 35 spline center sections... Might want to try either racingjunk.com or eBay and see if you can score some leftovers..... Depending on the length of the axles, maybe you could swap somebody for some 28 or 31 spline units.... worth a try.... or, what's the rear end width from drum to drum??? Maybe somebody would swap one to get the good axles.....Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, Live for Today!

If I had to do anything I kind of wanted to swap out the 31 spline side gears in the case to 35s. Otherwise I'll probably just have the axles resplined for $150pr. (about $250 total for usable chunk w axles resplined) Seems a shame to change something I may want later and have to spend big bucks on to replace. He wants $800 for the 35 splined, 4:30 gear, spool, nodular housing that was in the car.Thats not going to happen from me tho its probably worth it. But I'd have to change out the gears anyway, so that another $300 on top.Last edited by Dgas56; 02-26-2008 at 08:18 AM.

I would do some serious checking before I resplined the 35's if I were you. You will probably have to turn the root diameter down past the surface hardness to get to the correct diameter. If that happens you might as well not use them because they WILL twist. I think you would be money ahead to sell them and buy a set of 31 splines.

41 Willys is right I have a buddy that had 35's resplined to 31's out of an old drag car rear. The machine shop cautioned him about the hardness issue.Sure enough his 400 horse small block Chevy snapped one off at the side gear.Created much debris and now the whole center section is pretty much a door stop.If you think you can...you can If you think you can't...you're right . We just sent my Sons Moser axles back to them to have the bolt pattern changed from 4.75 to 5.5. It was like $ 60 for that, and they turned them around in two days. Great people.
New axles are about $ 300- $400 from them. If anyone knows how to do your axles, they will.

Which is about $790 more than I have lol and will not fit a Nova /Camaro which are harder to find,AND much more expensive ,for some reason the 68 -72 Chevelle/Monte/Elco's are more common, although w a car(truck) like that it would be easy to recoup the investment stripping and Egaying it. But I do not have time or room for that stuff. By the time I had it narrowed , the Willwood Rear Discs swapped over, a decent gear set and custom axles installed I'd have a fortune in it. No need to change rearends, the 9" will do fine, I'll have to look over the dirt sites. As it stands right now w the new 3:50 chunk, $300 for Moser axles seems doable. I am going to call them about the resplining and the hardening loss. They quoted me a good price to do it.Last edited by Dgas56; 02-26-2008 at 07:48 PM.
