Well, the Chevelle SHOULD have been done today... I say SHOULD because something happened on sunday night while spraying the graphics that myself, my DuPont rep and maybe HER Rep are still trying to figure out. I laid out the graphics like I always do. Wiped down the entire car with wax and grease remover and 2 new rags. Tacked it and let it sit for 20 or so minutes, just like I always do. Mixed my Violet pearl into my clear like I always do. Stepped into the booth and started in the middle of the hood on the right side, and let her rip! A couple of passes into the hood, it looks like the paint is fish eyeing... maybe a bit light on my first pass...? Anyway, I open it up a bit more and continue, going down the hood and onto the front valance, onto the front fender, down the door and onto the rear quarter... Long story short, the valance, fender tops and sides, and rear quarters are PERFECT! The hood and both doors look like I wiped them with WD-40 instead of w&g remover!!! Fisheyes looking like the moon!!! So bad that on the doors it started to run!!! The only difference in ANYTHING...everything else being equal is the hood and doors are fiberglass. BUT, I sealed, primed and based EVERYTHING on the car...???? Anybody got an idea??? I'm "guessing" at this point, but maybe the 'glass pieces had a static charge??? Is that even possible??? I have NEVER run into anything like this before...HOTROD, where are you???!!!??? REALLY need to get it done...I've got a '52 Chevy coming in tomorrow for a complete candy red metalflake body w/pearl white top... and the shop is FULL of bikes!!!!If its not worth doing right, its not worth doing... I can't see how the base color didn't fish eye if it was because the panels are fiber glass. Shame of all that work has to be done over, but I know you will make it right.
BradCSome days it's not even worth chewing thru the restraints !

I've done tons of glass bodies, and never had this, and the static in this warm dry climate is pretty bad! My guess would be a contaminant like WD40....maybe mold relase used by the 'glass manufacturer?
Years ago I did a mini truck. The owner had used WD40 on the tires. I wiped it down with cleaner twice, wet sanded, and wiped it again. I shot it with primer, and it fisheyed almost this badly.
Another thought is pinholes in the glass, from the gelcoat being too thin....but as much as this has, I doubt it.Last edited by HOTRODPAINT; 04-01-2008 at 09:50 PM.

What I have the problem with is that I have done all of the priming, sealing and basing that is on it to that point! No contaminates...like I said, EVERYTHING was done at the same time!! There is a coat of sealer under everything (remember, it came from another shop where it was messed up). 3 coats of urethane (2 part) primer and 4 coats of purple base. And it did THIS on top of all that, but ONLY on the fiberglass parts??? with all of the graphics being sprayed at the same time with the car assembled... AAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm in the process of getting the doors and hood sanded back down and rebasing, and I'm nervous it will happen again!!!! Hopefully I'll hear something back from my rep today... I have had brand new tac rags do this to me ( Crystal brand )
Also have had a bad batch of tape that had some kind of contaminate on it fish eye too .
Didnt look like the main base had any problems but the stripe did , Or you had some type of contaminate get on it as it was out side and W&G remover just smeared it around instead of cleaning .
The dealership I work at is right under our airport flight line , and I have baby fish eye problems every now and again when a Big Jet lands as they dump fuel and I suck it in through fresh air intake of my booth .
So many possibilities , its sometimes hard to pin point

In a case like this, I sand and shoot light coats that flash quick. On some of the worst cases, I have had to glaze and sand to fill the pinholes......like the time an employee sprayed WD40 outside the booth when I was spraying a high dollar streetrod! That was the last day we had any of THAT in the shop!!! I got it fixed, and it went on to be an NSRA Street Rod Of The Year....so it can have a happy ending.
You could add a little fisheye eliminator, if it's persistant. That allows the paint to bridge over the contaminant, if it isn't too bad. Just don't use it repeatedly, or it will add to the problem. Hang in there....You'll get it right!Last edited by HOTRODPAINT; 04-02-2008 at 05:45 PM.

Did you notice anything in the sealer? We ran into this from time to time when we painted Motorhomes. The front and rear caps were fiberglass and some days would go smooth then others we fought. Only on the fiberglass though, not any issues on the alluminum. We did find out about 6 bays down they were spraying tire cleaner on the tires and the silicone in the spray dirfted down and caused a big mess.Peace and Bacon Grease

Guys, thanks for the ideas, but what no one is noticing is: I wiped the WHOLE CAR down with the w&g remover at the same time, 20 minutes before spraying, at 9:00 at night in a sealed booth and I was the only person there in the shop!! Nothing got sprayed, nothing got dropped on it, and it only happened to 3 of the 8 body panels sprayed and they all happen to be fiberglass!!! Not being nasty , just noticed everyone is looking at the obvious and I have looked there as well, but the obvious has been eliminated! I'm SO concerned because between tomorrow and friday, I will be doing these pieces all over again and DO NOT want the same results again, but don't know what to do different!!! I have lost about 10 hours on the job due to this happening, not to mention the customer doesn't care why or how, just that he's now gonna miss the show he was invited to take it to this weekend!!! you should try a soap like dawn or spick and span with some water. some of the wax and grease removers are to hot and may drive it in they use to make polly cracker ? i have seen glass do this the only way i could stop it was put down the first coat on lite let tack up to the touch get every thing out of there that you used on it tack rag throw out and get some new paper towels new gloves if you use fish eye every thing will need it all the way thru the hole job that sucks .your paint that you laid down the blue move all the release up in to your top skin of paint so you need to try to wash it with a soap not a wax remover good luckLast edited by pat mccarthy; 04-03-2008 at 05:27 AM.

I had fiberglass bubble once because of a temperature difference from the time we painted to the time it dried. Very wierd stuff. I hope you get past the problem, you do great work. And yes I'm sure you wouldn't have overlooked the temperature thing, just relating my own frustrations from the past. Keep us posted and post some more shots."
