Decoding a Mustang with no data plate

Picked up a 66 Mustang this week, and according to the VIN on the inner fender (6T07C14XXXX) it was built at the New Jersey plant, and is a 289 2 barrel coupe. The data plate is missing from the door jamb, so is there any other way to figure out what the original setup on the car was? There is a tag mounted on the top of the left inner fender behind the shock tower that also has the VIN on it...

    D283

    2 L12 6T07C14XXXX

    65B V 64

    RM

As the car sits right now, it's a V-8, C-4, manual steering, manual drum brakes, and looks like it had the dealer installed under dash AC at one time. All that remains of the AC is the compressor mounting plate and idler pulley. After doing a little web searching I discovered that Ford didn't save any of the records on the 65/66 Mustangs, and Kevin Marti doesn't do them... any suggestions?

One of the things I'm going to have to get a shop to do is correct the shock tower fatigue problem so both front wheels are pointing in the same direction and not be leaning in like a drunken sailor. Does anyone know of a body / chassis shop in or near St Louis that is familiar with redoing early Mustang shock towers?

Why do you want to know the original configuration for the car? If it is to restore it to exact original...do what the big boys do and buy a data plate that makes it whatever you want it to be! Since, as you say, there is no way to really verify such, make it a hipo stickshift....there is at least one company selling trim plates made to order.

Unless you are doing a restoration, you are probably just curious. Perhaps one of the mustang clubs could help with some of the small clues...

on the shock tower on a mustang, the letter code on the drivers side is what designates it isn't it?

The only part of the codes I really care about are the paint and interior colors so I know which upholstery kit to get. The links posted (thanks Denny & Blue) shows a 65B as a deluxe interior, which I'm assuming means a pony interior. What's confusing me is the dash pad is dark blue, but the interior panels and vinyl on the seats is light blue and white.

I'm not wanting to make this a concourse correct restoration by any stretch of the imagination. Just looking nice in the original colors is enough for me.
