gas filler location??
this is on my '35 ford. the stock location is in the tail light, but i'm not using stock tail lights. i thought about putting the filler in the trunk, but i plan to shave the trunk handle and for that reason and dripping gas in the trunk that isn't to practical. my dad wants to add a flush door to the fender, but that would be my last choice.
after seeing the Bob Drake '35 with the license plate mounted under the trunk lid i was thinking about doing that and adding the filler under the plate in the back of the car. if i used a stock style tank with the filler on the left side would i be able to make a new filler going from the left side looping around to the back or would i need to build the tank with the filler in the back of the tank? any other ideas of a filler location are welcome. thanks!'35 Ford coupe- LT1/T56, '32 Ford pickup, 70 GTO convertible, 06 GTO

I was going to say the same thing. under the plate is what I would do,it's clean and works. just keep your plumbing away from any heat source and you should be good.

The only problem that I can think of with a license plate location is that it is quite low and filling the tank might not be a fun process with back splash. Why not get a Hagen or other mfr fender door or even an OEM from something and mount it higher, i.e., in the panel behind the rear window or the quarter - then you will have an easier fill plus have a better set up for venting.Dave W

Dave, stock 35 and 6 owners are well versed in the problems of the low mounted fill. Here's a shot showing a typical outcome from acceleration with the stock setup in the first pic.
35, the fill behind the plate thing would be discrete, I'd say you need to relocate the fill hole/pipe to the center back of the tank. You'll have to dodge some bracing back there as that's where the original spare carrier was located. While I agree with your doubts about the fill in the trunk thing, I'm a fan of mounting it under the fender. No exotic plumbing just a later model fill pipe adapted in with a support bracket. Here's a pic of my '36 roadster door, it's from a '46-8 Ford. I like it better than the aftermarket stuff and the contour fits the fender perfectly.Last edited by Bob Parmenter; 01-04-2009 at 08:24 AM.

Thanks guys...the thread was made a little while ago so since then i ordered a custom tank from Rock Valley with a filler centered in the rear of the tank. I also found a cheap licence plate bracket from a Nova someone powdercoated "chrome" and I ordered a lighted license plate frame a month ago that I have not yet received. That should round out my recessed license plate/gas filler project.
Bob- the bracing from the spare will likely have to be cut out anyway. the car was hit many years ago in the rear and the body man wants to cut that section out and bang it out then weld it back in.
Thanks guys!'35 Ford coupe- LT1/T56, '32 Ford pickup, 70 GTO convertible, 06 GTO

Ok gang. It's been awhile. With everything that was going on taking care of my mom's affairs and making a few needed mods to the Healey, it was June before anything really got rolling on this...
