    more room for 3rd. pedal

     



    Need some advice from you car builders on how I can get more room to add a 3rd. pedal to my 37 chevy truck. Wasn't much room to begin with and I can move(don't really want to) my firewall back 3-4" but even doing that the pedals will be real close together and my size 11 shoes will be on both pedals if mounted below steering colume. Would like them next to steering colum if possible. Must be a way because thats what the truck had when new.

    Dumb as it sounds, wear shoes similar to driving shoes.

    Many of the athletic shoes available nowadays are more like a real-short boot than they are a pair of tennies.

    Wearing boots in the tight confines of a hot rod don't cut it most times.

    I wear driving shoes, because my sneakers are two wide in the toe area. With my sneakers it's too easy to hit the brake and the gas at same time. Done that, scares the crap out of you.

    Another more expensive possibility is to replace your steering column with one of the new short columns The steering shaft is just the 3/4" double D shaft which gives you more room at the firewall than a standard column. You could also add one of the Steer Clear units give you more room for pedals and feet by offsetting that allow you to mount your short column up to 16" off of the floor. Speedway sells them ($600 - $700). Not cheap buy a way to find more room for a 3rd pedal.

    For the additional $1000 (Steer Clear + shorty column) you can buy a lot of driving shoes.

    Chevy there are some compact factory cars that have some that work great if you have the hangers . I tried some 67 mustang i have which allow the steering column to go between brake pedal and clutch pedal . I didnt like that because may have push fuel pedal over not there yet was just thinking ahead. I found some from a 94 Mustang that is really compact and sit to the left of column. Even if you move them on you can catch them with the toe pad of your foot . Way its done in a Mustang anyhow . They where cheap and even if i have to modify arms i can get them to fit perfect . Here is a couple pics and i think the A has a smaller foot well then your truck .

    Keep in mind that when you upholster the car the front side panel will take away some footroom to the side.

    No reason the upholstery guy can't make a sunken well bit of upholstery in that area.

    If not, you'll lose about 2" of footroom to the side.

    Interesting set up bluestang67. Don't think I've seen a set up with the clutch pedal that far to left. I'm thinking of getting a offset steering colume and use the origional pedals that went through the floor. I think that might work

    C9 the aperture of the pic does not show it well but there is ample room for the foot with about 1 1/2 clearence for mine . Really hard to get a good shot leaning in , over and twisting LOL .

    It looks like there will be sufficient room for the clutch pedal if the area is upholstered normally.

    I was surprised to find a lot of room lost in my 32 after getting it upholstered.

    With a T-400 no clutch pedal problems, but the brake pedal is over to the left since I'm a left foot braker.

    Along with that, it gave some extra room for your foot when in cruise mode.

    A couple of pics to give you an idea.

    Size 10 shoe that is slid too far up on the throttle pedal.

    The hump with auto's take up alot of valuable space . Running the T-5 slight hump with the way i have engine mounted . I should be able to mount the fuel pedal from same car . The trim on side will be a hard plastic with just a layer of material .

    Granted.

    Fwiw, I built the trans hump to allow for good air flow around the trans and out of the engine compt.

    As well as having a place to wedge my throttle foot on long trips.
    The raised pads are nice, but not near as good as a trans tunnel goes vis a vis taking it easy on your throttle ankle etc.

    This car - 31 A roadster on 32 rails - has the same engine trans setup (455 Buick, T-400) as the 32 roadster pictured above.
    Angles, location in the frame are identical.


    Good airflow capabilities as noted above, but more importantly, a trans tunnel high enough to be able to wedge your foot between throttle pedal and tunnel.

    I see guys build these cars with a very flat floor and virtually no trans tunnel.
    Combine that with a throttle pedal hanging out in space and you have a car thats uncomfortable to drive as well as fatiguing.

    Ok for hitting the Saturday night rod run or a local car show, but actually driving them for some distance, not something I'd want to do....

    Ahh C9 a little foot rest as you say . That is a good idea maybe i will fit the tunnel after pedal install . This will make them work together i like that . Thanks for that info .

    I am using the original pedals in my 37 p/u,I also have a original column too and I still have the six and its hooked to a T-5 so there is no hump in the floor. I guess it was easy for me and I can see it will be hard to keep 3 pedals in one if there is modifications to the floor area so I dont know what to tell you since mine will probably never get a V8 and have any firewall or floor modifications.
