Thread: Running wiring through firewall

Thought I would let you all know what I did. I ended up pulling about 7 wires back through my very lower part of the firewall and cut the tips off. This gave me enough room to get in with my Dremmel tool. I made the hole larger and kept in mind I may want to add 2-4 more wires in the future so left enough room. I then went to Lowes and the auto parts store looking for grommets. The best one that fit like a CHAMP was a grommet that you use in a valve cover for your pcv or breather! http://www.holley.com/241-212.asp
They come in a few different diameters and they are thick! I cut the grommet since it was larger than what I needed and removed a little till the diameter was just right. It fit snug enough but to be save I also glued it in. Looks great and was kinda fun to do. I put some roug sandpaper around my broom handle, taped the ends on and sanded off some of the inner diameter rubber to make the I.D. larger to fit more wires.
Remember, you can't see where my wires go through the lower firewall so I didn't have to worry about that. This looks good enough that even if you could, it looks nice!
Thanks for all your help!Last edited by bucs012; 08-18-2008 at 01:30 PM.

I've been away for a few days but a package was waiting for me from "Fastaxle" (www.fastaxle.com). Although a bit expensive at $21 each, I received two aluminum rings with grommets and a precut hole 0.75" diameter. Amazingly, the grommets fit my ugly firewall holes exactly and the 7/8" hose fits snugly through the hole in the rubber grommet. They cut the holes for me to fit the hose that I have. The slight disadvantage is that the aluminum rings (anodized "clear") require four small holes and the small bolts through the firewall but I can get some nice stainless bolts for that from the local ACE Hardware store. Still the OD of the aluminum rings just fits the available space on the edge of the firewal without overlap of the edge of the engine indent. Thanks for the on-line search that found these grommets. Relative to the split grommet idea I had to use some grooved fender welt around the bottom of the steering column in a similar way to the '32 solution above.

I wanted to complain about this NZ slang business, but I see it was resolved before it mattered. LOL..
