What exactly is the difference between internal and external balance. I would assume that an internal balance engine has symmetrically weighted flywheels and balancers? The 302 in my sister's 83 mustange is externally balanced because the flywheel has a counterweight on it?

Get one cheap from a parts house that is good about returns, install it, and if the engine runs rough, return it and look for a 283 specific balancer.

Classic Industries has a balancer that fits 55-67 265 and 283's and 68 307's. Only $162.63, ouch. They also have balancers that fit everything but 400's for 69.95 from Proform which isn't GM, but is a licensed GM manufactuer.
