Thread: steering column bushings

how hard is it to change the bushings in the steering column...i'm told it is quite a job...actual words were pain in the a__...i've never torn a steering column apart before...

what year? the new ones are a abit of a pain but the older ones from the 60s are not bad at all

you will need the tool that will push down the streering lock so you can get the clip off that is abit of a pain but not bad if you take your time you will have to remove or pull up the turn switch to get at the ball bearing just watch that they do not dump out from what i can remember on them tilts they get loose if you pull on the wheel to get in and out of the car is that it ?

i do pull on the wheel to get out of the car...the steering wheel will move up and down or side to side now...does not have any slack in the steerings...just feel like the wheel itself is loose...

common problem,the tilt bolts have worked loose. Heres a link describing the repair,hope it helps and by the way use red locktight on those bolts when you do the job.

I'm assuming you are refering to the GM tilt unit..As others have said it's not bushngs or bearings and shouldn't require any parts.. You do need a lockplate tool, A pivot pin puller and an inverted torx socket.. An assortment of hooks and picks can come in handy as well. I have done many of these over the years...The first one is a pain and requires patience..78 and newer have a few more parts than the early ones.. Good luck..
