Starter problems
I’ve had that starting problem with this 1970 ford truck ever since I got it.
It was always slow cranking even with the new battery.
The wires always look small to me.
Lately if I went some where and shut it off, I would have to wait
About 15 minutes to get it to crank fast enough to start.
Yester day I got stuck at the store for a hour, talk about pissed.
Finally got it started and went home, Jumped in to the other car and
Went to the parts store for a new starter and bigger cables.
This morning I put them in the truck along with my home made heat shield
and then tried to turn it over. Nothing, CLICK-CLICK ok now I’m pissed.
I’m thinking I’ve gotten a bad starter, so I pull every thing back apart.
Bench test the starter it works fine, Put every thing back together.
Try to start it again, CLICK-CLICK nothing.
Well when I bench test it, I tested it through the wall solenoid so I know
At least that is not the problem. Now I’ve run all new 4 gage wire to the
side of the block for a ground from the neg. side of the battery.
And from the pos side of the battery to one side of the solenoid.
Then from the other side of the solenoid down to the starter. All new!!!
Well I thought let me try running a ground wire from the block to a starter
Bolt and see what happens.
The thing now cranks like a high torque starter, all this time its had a bad ground.
Live and learn.

The ground cables are pathetic on those...I don't know why Ford decided to cut cost there but they did it for years..

Well thats the only problem I've had with it.
This truck has been completely restored.
Fuel injected 302 from a 89 Lincoln.
all the interior has been done after market
A/C that will freez you out in five minutes.
The thing probably gets 30 mpg.
All the suspension is new.
I drove thru the GM dealers lot just to
get thier goat and the sales men and service
men tried to buy it from me.
So I'm happy with it.
I only posted this so it might help some
one else with the same kind problem.
Hope thats all right. Kurt

Hey ,Old Pal, Old buddy. I was bring my old cars to georgia and started having the same problem and had it for five years until i ran across a fellow here in Hartwell. I was told the same thing and every thing to and including to change my distribor. anyway I changed starters and batterys ,alternators. but failed to change the regulator. I thought it it was internal AND HE CHECKED IT AND WAS INTERMITANT. Haven't had a problem since . Check the regulator ,JimB- 68 chevelle ss-454 --------, 1965 chevelle ----In progress-----
