Steve - I learned about 35 years ago that shoes are a requirement when welding even if you're stark nekkid otherwise. I wear work boots and socks when I'm working in the garage. Not exactly a fashion statement with shorts, but it beats all that "dancing" that occurs when trying to weld in sandals.

Cffisher - I know what you mean. Most of my "garage" shirts have a number of holes in the front.

Perley - Just hit that fairing with some Krylon spray can primer, polish those stainless steel bolts, and it'll look fine. Paint is certainly optional anyway; there are a lot of primered hot rods on the road. You can always do what my son did with his sedan - he bought 8 spray cans of black lacquer and a couple of apple green engine paint and... see pic below. No, I'm not starting a new project; that picture above is about 7 years old. My son shot that when I was welding his frame together.

YEAH, I hear you guys about clothing (or lack thereof) while welding. Just yesterday I went out in garage just to 'check on things', and while out there decided to weld just a small project! Of course I had dressed for warm weather -- shorts, no shirt, and slippers! So while welding a spark went inside my slipper---------I haven't done a dance like that for a long while! Will I ever learn????? Not at my age. Arghhhhh

I've set myself on fire several times this year. It's not the welding that gets me it's cutting steel with a cutoff wheel. I even melted my cel phone in my pocket when I caught my jean shorts on fire. Oh well I didn't like those shorts anyway.

I caught myself on fire too with a grinder. I was working under the car grinding down some welds when my chest started getting warm so I looked down and there were flames. I thought I was the only stupid one for doing that.

    Little More

Here I have taken the body off of the chassis and have it standing on it's head (again). I need to weld up the bottom of the sub floor framing. Also, I mentioned before that I needed a clutch operator. This is a pull type slave that I got from Speedway. I have made a bracket from a piece of 1 1/2" angle iron, notched it to fit beside and under a section of the K/H member. After determining where it needs to be, I sanded off the silver paint and welded it on. The slave cylinder moves about an inch, which I am told should be enough to disengage the clutch.
    More as I can. perley

    Space

In this view you can get an idea of the compact space on the forward end of the clutch fork lever. Lot's of stuff in this small area. That's why I decided to go with the pull type slave cylinder, as a mechanical linkage or a push type slave would have no where to mount or to fit. I hope it works!

Well, it's been over 6 years since my last post and that long since I last did anything on the Essex, BUT, I am getting ready to get started again on it. The years have taken their toll on my plastic roof on my greenhouse-garage, so I've got to save some money to get another cover. Right now we still have a foot or more of snow on the ground, and more where it's been plowed into piles. So it may be awhile, but I'm getting ready. I've been off the build threads for a long time too, and I am wondering about J. Robinson and his projects. His email address bounces, so I don't know about him. Hang tough all my friends. I'll be back at it! Perley

I am still in need of the doors for my Coupe. And a windshield frame. If anyone has one, or knows where I might find these, please let me know

You could build a windshield frame or devise a frameless glue-in windshield like a lot of fiberglass bodies use, but the doors are another story. Hopefully some will turn up.

    Stilll here

Hi everyone. I am still walking and talking, but no building! I had a stroke two years ago and I still haven't recovered completely. I did go out in our makeshift garage and uncovered the Essex the other day. Then just sat on a seat and dreamed, and wished, and remembered. Later, in the cave, I dug out all of the books and files I have on the build, all of the parts lists and such. Really pining away now, wishing for the abilities that I've lost. I have pretty much decided to offer it for sale, along with all of the parts I've accumulated. It breaks my heart, but short of winning the lottery, nothing will happen now. My 5 Grandchildren are interested, but no one has money to start going again. sigh. My thanks to everyone that has followed along on the build through the years, I've had fun, not only in building, but in keeping up with the posts on Club Hot Rod.
I have to give a big thank you to my friend and mentor, Jim Robinson of Titusville, FL. I probably couldn't have done what I have without all of his help and input. Thanks again my Friend Jim.
