Perley - I think I like the fairing, too. Instead of welding it on, though, I would paint it to match the body and attach it with 4 button-head allen bolts. Not much weight or stress there, so you could drill & tap some 1/4-20 or 1/4-28 holes directly in the frame horns and use stainless bolts.
Rickomatic - As a former welding instructor I shouldn't admit this, but I do most of my welding in jean-shorts and tank top! (see pic) It's just too darn hot here to wear all the protective gear, especially when I usually weld for seconds at a time with minutes between welds.Jim

Jim I do to, but I wear shoes and socks now, instead of flip flops, Feet are a little to sensitive to slag!" "No matter where you go, there you are!" Steve.

Hey Jim! Thanks for the input here. Yep, that sounds like a better plan, I like it. Trouble is ------ I don't know as I plan on painting the body. Looks lovely as is!
Except for where I spray painted that orangeish paint on the lower quarter. What are you building there now with those pieces of square tube? You got another project going already? perleyToo old to work, Too poor to quit.

Steve - I learned about 35 years ago that shoes are a requirement when welding even if you're stark nekkid otherwise. I wear work boots and socks when I'm working in the garage. Not exactly a fashion statement with shorts, but it beats all that "dancing" that occurs when trying to weld in sandals.
Cffisher - I know what you mean. Most of my "garage" shirts have a number of holes in the front.
Perley - Just hit that fairing with some Krylon spray can primer, polish those stainless steel bolts, and it'll look fine. Paint is certainly optional anyway; there are a lot of primered hot rods on the road. You can always do what my son did with his sedan - he bought 8 spray cans of black lacquer and a couple of apple green engine paint and... see pic below. No, I'm not starting a new project; that picture above is about 7 years old. My son shot that when I was welding his frame together.Jim

YEAH, I hear you guys about clothing (or lack thereof) while welding. Just yesterday I went out in garage just to 'check on things', and while out there decided to weld just a small project! Of course I had dressed for warm weather -- shorts, no shirt, and slippers! So while welding a spark went inside my slipper---------I haven't done a dance like that for a long while! Will I ever learn????? Not at my age. ArghhhhhToo old to work, Too poor to quit.

I've set myself on fire several times this year. It's not the welding that gets me it's cutting steel with a cutoff wheel. I even melted my cel phone in my pocket when I caught my jean shorts on fire. Oh well I didn't like those shorts anyway.

I caught myself on fire too with a grinder. I was working under the car grinding down some welds when my chest started getting warm so I looked down and there were flames. I thought I was the only stupid one for doing that.

Little More
Here I have taken the body off of the chassis and have it standing on it's head (again). I need to weld up the bottom of the sub floor framing. Also, I mentioned before that I needed a clutch operator. This is a pull type slave that I got from Speedway. I have made a bracket from a piece of 1 1/2" angle iron, notched it to fit beside and under a section of the K/H member. After determining where it needs to be, I sanded off the silver paint and welded it on. The slave cylinder moves about an inch, which I am told should be enough to disengage the clutch.
More as I can. perleyToo old to work, Too poor to quit.

Space
In this view you can get an idea of the compact space on the forward end of the clutch fork lever. Lot's of stuff in this small area. That's why I decided to go with the pull type slave cylinder, as a mechanical linkage or a push type slave would have no where to mount or to fit. I hope it works!Too old to work, Too poor to quit.

Well, it's been over 6 years since my last post and that long since I last did anything on the Essex, BUT, I am getting ready to get started again on it. The years have taken their toll on my plastic roof on my greenhouse-garage, so I've got to save some money to get another cover. Right now we still have a foot or more of snow on the ground, and more where it's been plowed into piles. So it may be awhile, but I'm getting ready. I've been off the build threads for a long time too, and I am wondering about J. Robinson and his projects. His email address bounces, so I don't know about him. Hang tough all my friends. I'll be back at it! PerleyToo old to work, Too poor to quit.
