Newbie needs help!!
okay guys heres the deal, i have a chevy 350 .30 over. flat top pistons, have heads are 462624 for a 350 with 1.94 ,1.5. car ran okay swapped cam out for a 305h (.525 lift) my buddy put it dot to dot(is that right?) put heads on turned by hand seemed okay. started motor and every cylinder sounds like a BAD lifter noise. Heres my only thoughts im sure you guys have better ideas or can tell me where im wrong
1 valves hitting pistons
2 someone told me stock heads are only good to .510 lift(maybe sprig bottoming out)
3 cam not degreed
My buddy is SWEARING its because of bad oil pump but guage reads 40 at idle and 80 with a lil throttle, same as before. Also put a lil oil in valve covers no differance.
HELP!!!! IDEAS???? really dont want to tear down if i dont have to wife will kill me for putting her car outside for a few days, and me being up late

Well your answer is in your earlier post.but if you go to Comp Cams website and pull up the cam card it says you can not run the stock springs or rocker arms and the heads will hafta be machined for the correct springs. It also says if your running an automatic trans your gonna need a 3000 stall speed converter.... Looks like the wife is gonna kick your arse ....

got the converter for it,and the gears. what springs and rockers should i use? im kinda new to aftermarket stuff and its been a while since ive turned a wrench. ANY HELP WOULD BE AWESOME
Why do i need to change springs? what is it doing? Just trying to learn a lil, THANKS GUYS

Tell your wife that she's damned lucky to have a car at all. Then tell her to get her *** in the kitchen and fix you some eggs while you pull the heads.
What the hell is wrong with you guys that you cow-tow to these frumpy women????? MAN-UP dude and face facts. You married the wrong woman. The right one would be out there with you, consoling you and holding the trouble light.
Further, you need to come to the realization that your friend is an idiot and that you have, in your overexuberence and ignorance, chosen the wrong cam.Last edited by techinspector1; 12-23-2008 at 04:58 PM.

go to the comp cams website and pull up the cam card for part # 12-214-4
that'll tell you what parts you'll need. You need the springs because with that kinda lift they will coil bind and the rocker arms slot will allow it to hit the stud. Probally has already bent the pushrods. the heads hafta be machined in the valve pockets for the longer springs. Sounds like you might be in a little over your head so buddie up with who ever does the machine work on the heads to help ya figure the valve to piston clearences.
Gotta go for now. Oh and watch that Techie guy,He's about the smartest engine & numbers guy around,Butttttttttt he'll gitcha in trouble with your woman...

Oh and Techies right, you did choose the wrong cam for any thing but full race along with the proper components. You might want to look at the new Comp Thumper cams.

throw a RV cam in it it will fit and run fine check every thing out and go from there the lt1 spring will work with your cam your stock spring s are stacking up i bet and if they have a 030 or 060 shim under them they are check the valve seals that the retainers are not hitting and smashing the seals off the guidesIrish Diplomacy ..the ability to tell someone to go to Hell ,,So that they will look forward to to the trip

You know, at this point, I'm gonna have to tell everyone that I'm probably spoiled. I've been with Sharon for nearly 40 years and all of that time, she has been right by my side on the myriad of projects that have come and gone at this house. For 40 years, she has parked her car on the driveway so that I could have the space in the garage to work on whatever it is that is currently in need of help. She has kept me plied with drink, cold drinks with ice in hot weather, hot coffee on cold nights and has fixed me a plate of food on a paper plate and a tray and brought it to me in the garage....THOUSANDS OF TIMES. She has stood there with a trouble light (and by the way, she knows how to hold it to keep the light on the work and out of my eyes) more times than I can count. She has made suggestions about the projects when I have been stumped and has run to the parts store for me when I'm up to my elbows in axle grease and don't want to clean up to go. She has spent I don't know how much time looking for parts for me in the Greensheet papers, local newspapers and on the web. She makes phone calls to check out cars, trucks and parts for me and find out if they are worth my time to persue. She is the nurse who cleans and bandages the wounds I receive while hobbying. She has a good sense of humor about all things. Sorry about all you other guys who are stuck with a frump.Last edited by techinspector1; 12-24-2008 at 11:54 AM.

Car is nothing but a project and a toy. dont really want an rv cam. ill just go buy a set of heads and call it a day. She just gets mad cause i tend to make a 2 day job take 2 weeks and shes tired of it, and worse off she does like to "help" by asking the same question 100 times and get mad and throw stuff when i tell her how to do something.
You guys have told me pretty much what i was thinking. Cam was a freebie and only got $500 into whole car. What heads would you guys match with this setup? Like i said id like to keep the cam or one like it and go from there. Guess im gunna go take the heads off...need a 12 pack first

OK, let's go back to zero and figure this out. To figure static compression ratio, you need 5 figures.
727cc's in the cylinder @ 0.030"-over.
76cc's in the chamber.
9cc's in the deck, figuring the original 0.025" piston deck height and the additional 0.020" from rebuilder pistons. If you used premium pistons with the original compression height same as OEM, the compression height will be 1.560", otherwise cheap rebuilder pistons will be 1.540", resulting in 0.045" piston deck height.
6cc's in the flat top piston eyebrows.
8cc's in the gasket.
Adding these up totals 826cc's drawn in on the intake stroke. As the piston comes to TDC, this volume reduces to 90cc's. Divide 826 by 90 and find 9.2:1 static compression ratio.
The cam to make the motor work properly with this SCR would be in the 260-270 range, not 305. With the 305 cam, the intake valve closes too late to trap the already low volume of mixture and you'll be lucky to make 100 psi cylinder pressure. A 260-270 cam would make 140-160 psi with the 9.2 SCR that you now have.
If you want to use that 305 cam, or one like it, you'll have to rebuild what you have to make a 10.5-12.0 motor out of it to make the cam work right. Also, the 305 cam, even with the proper SCR, will make power from 3500 to 7000. Are you geared for this? Is this a solid lifter cam? 'Cause a juice cam will sign off at about 6200 when the lifters pump up.
Do yourself a huge favor and read this tutorial from Iskenderian....

Ok gang. It's been awhile. With everything that was going on taking care of my mom's affairs and making a few needed mods to the Healey, it was June before anything really got rolling on this...
