Flatehead V8 Ford starter question
What would cause a starter button to turn over real slow like the battery is going dead, then it will spend fast enough to start the car? 50 Ford everything is still 6 volts. Thanks in advance.

Yes, I forgot to mention that, it's when it's cold. After that it fires right up.
Thanks

With six volt systems, grounds are very important. Check all connections, especially the grounds. Scrape them down to bare metal. Run a temporary ground from the starter to the block. If it shows improvement, you have a bad ground. Take the starter off and clean around the mounting surface and where the bolts are.

Thanks Denny, The car was sitting for long periods at a time. It had me puzzled usually I've had trouble with hot starts. I will check, and clean all connections.

This is a little off what we were talking about but it was a wake up call for me this morning. I try to start the cars in the garage during this cold weather to keep them going.
On another site a guy's car caught on fire in his garage while starting it up. It did a lot of damage before he could get the fire out, and the car out of the garage. He was lucky the garage didn't catch on fire.
I'm going to make sure I have an extinguisher real close, and have the wife looking at the engine while I try to get them running.
