theft prevention
Just wanted to turn you guys on to a device I bought for my 69 chevelle after it was broken into and nearly stolen. The thief busted up the steering column some, and if he had known what he was doing, would certainly have had the car. The cops said that this is a typical technique for stealing the newer cars. Anyway, I got a Grant anti-theft system.
The Grant system is a quick release for the steering wheel, which installs behind the steering wheel, but requires a Grant wheel to be installed ( of course ). So, the big downer is that you can't re-use your stock wheel without modification. Also, it extends the length of the steering column by about 1 1/4" so you need an almost 'flat' wheel. The good news is that Grant has a wide assortment of steering wheels.
Anyway.. here is how it works. You pull the wheel, install the kit, and assemble the wheel to the quick release. It takes about an hour, and you retain the use of the horn.
When you want to 'secure' the vehicle, you insert a key into the quick release, flip a lever, pull the wheel to the left and POP. The wheel comes off in your hand. Then, you install a BRIGHT RED cap, pull the key, and you're done. Takes about ten seconds, and you can take your wheel with you else secure it in the trunk or whatever.
To reinstall the wheel, it takes.. yep you guessed it, another ten seconds. Put in the key, push the lever, turn the cap to the left, and pop it comes off. Put the wheel on, turn to the right, pop it's on. Pull the key and done.
You can find it in Summit catalog. This anti-theft system gives a wonderful visual deterrent and in my opinion is a cheap fix ( about $200 ) and peace of mind..
Education is expensive. Keep that in mind, and you'll never be terribly upset when a project goes awry.

Thank you for the info and thank goodness they didn't get your car. It's a shame that has to be done.

Actually, I often carry my Tarus Judge with 410 shotgun shells and colt .45 long, and I ALWAYS have my keltec .380
Problem is, you aren't always around to protect the car. Sometimes it's on its own. It got broke into in the work parking lot.. security guard, cameras and all. I watched it on video afterwards.. they were pretty slick..

I considered that Grant system - but I really like my upholstery matched LeCarra wheel and Billet Specialties polished column adapter. Too bad there wasn't another that would use other brands or build into what you already have installed. Now - I have just a 'hidden' switch for the MSD plus a master switch.
If they want the entire car - well then they'll get it via wrecker or rollback regardless Good choice though for those who didn't already have a wheel setup already or are going to update anyhow and not a lot more then a wheel and adapterDave W
I am now gone from this forum for now - finally have pulled the plug
Ok gang. It's been awhile. With everything that was going on taking care of my mom's affairs and making a few needed mods to the Healey, it was June before anything really got rolling on this...
