Check those Jack Stands!!!!!!
We all know we should use them but how often do you check the jack stand itself??? A member of ChevyTalk posted about what he found when he pulled the extension out by accident.

That just gives me the creeps. I use them plus 2 floor jacks every time I crawl under my car and I still have trouble laying under it not thinking about what could happen if something gave way.

I don't like jack stands, never have, they scare me. But I do have a pair of 6 ton ones that I use when desperate. Normally I use 12 ton ramps to get under the car.Bob

I always use two stands and leave the jack after lowering it just enough onto the stands... beats a couple lengths of 4x4's we've seen on here before Ramps are good unless you need to take the wheels off...

A little story about ramps. Not 12 ton ramps but the ones you buy a parts stores. A friend of mine was pulling his car up on a new pair of ramps he was near the top and he hit the brakes to slow down not wanting to go into the stops. When he hit the brakes the ramps colapsed as the front wheels locked up but the rear kept driving. Good heads up on the stands. Glad I finaly got a hoist, but there are maintanance isues there also. I've got the Spirit on 4 stands right now and was laying under it the other day while welding. Think I had better check things out and add my two other stands before I crawl back under.

Also, if you are worried what you have on stands may slide on the stand because steel on steel is very slippery just put some wood or cardboard or leather in between.

Mine are newer, but I never trust just them alone, always keep the floor jack in place and wheels blocked! I'm always thinking this is no time for an earth quake! I don't know about the rest of you but mine like the meat between your thumb and your index finger, when you let them down!" "No matter where you go, there you are!" Steve.

Does anyone remember those crappy sheet metal stands that were made out of sheet metal and were like 2.99 each and used the pins??? I remember seeing a lot of those that folded up with a little bit of lateral pursuasion...All the current cars of the time were a lot heavier then as well...Now we have ratchet stands but so many are made in china.I remember when hot rods were all home made.

Yep. My brother had a pair on screw adjustable metal alloy stands that were great for getting the exact height you wanded, just a bit slower going up or down, but they never bit me like my wratcheting ones do! Another reason why beer and cars don't mix well!" "No matter where you go, there you are!" Steve.
