    starter problems

have had my starter in and out of my car a couple times, cant quite figure out whats up, put in a new starter drive and suddenly the starter is playing jeckle and hyde. I hit the ign switch and nothing n click or nothing, there is full power getting the solenid as checked it plus also put new solenoid on. hit button a couple times real fast and suddenly bang turns over like a champ.wporks fine out of the car on the floor,Checked the grounds(double grounded direct to battery and also to frame) and the button switch and all seem ok. There seems to be power going somewhere cause if i hold the start button down the ign resistance coil on thd cowl heats up. Power is going up the 12 start to tehcoil and feeding back through the resistance coil i think?
Dont know if that was related to the problem or not, cant figure it out.
    Any thoughts??

checked it out puts out correct voltage. It almost seems like it wants to feed all the voltage right through the srter to the ign coil but i cant see how that would happen. I am going to disconnect the start wire that goes to the coil and see if it still has the same problem

GM starters need a full 12v shot of power to work, I'll bet yours will kick in if you short across the "Start" and "Batt" posts with a screwdriver. The wire going down to the "Start" post isn't big enough, or there's a bad connection on it somewhere.

The ignition resister shouldn't heat up like that. Are you sure you aren't getting your start power from the resister?

My first thought was ignition switch too. How old is the switch? Are all your grounds tight and clean?

Got it back in the car tonight and its got to be the starter switch, checked voltage at end of wire at starter and is ok but once its hooked up does the same funny thing.
the strter does work fine as i hooked up my remote start switch and it activates and works without a problem.
Off to get a new switch(its just a push button style)
