speedo confusion
Hey I have a 1940 Pontiac 2 door with a Chevy drive train 350 with a 350t trans and vdo gauges. This all came in the car when I bought it but the speedo was never hooked up I was wondering what need to do the job myself? I talked to a local speed shop and they wanted 300 buck to set it up for me. I was hoping to do it with a bit less invested. Theanks in advance for your help.

If it's a cable drive speedo it is simple.. If it's electric you should be able to get directions for the install..No big deal...Not worth 300 buxI remember when hot rods were all home made.

What tranny do you have?
If itis electric you will need a sending unit and then it is 3 wires. Real simple.
You should start by pulling out the speedo and look for a model number

Very simple 3 wires to hook up and then 1 button to program. VDO are the easiest insturments in the hobby to programLast edited by iceburgh; 03-03-2009 at 10:14 AM.

Mine is cable driven, and I have over $300 in mine, if my time is worth $5 an hour, and the damned thing still is off, needle bounces all over the place, but I ain't quit yet. I have invested in 2 cables, and 2 speedO heads, and lots of labor, not to mention the PBR's drank while working on it .

Iceburgh nailed it with the sender and part number. This is what you need. Then once wired together. There are a ton of websites out there for VDO that will tell you step by step on how to calibrate your speedo. I have VDO too... very simple to calibrate and very stable accurate reading.
When I got my car from the prior owner, they had ganged together 3 senders like the one Iceburgh showed. They couldn't get the last one to fit, so they put a 90 degree driver before mounting the last one. So much weight caused the tranny speedo drive case to warp and leak. I replaced the speedo drive case with a new one and removed everything except one sender.
Why three senders you ask? I have an LT1 engine and the computer needs to know the speed. They also had a separate sendor for the Speedo and one for the cruise control. I went to one and drove the speedo and cruise off of the one coming out of the computer.

Thanks Iceburgh for the info, if not for your help I surly would have wound up like moparjack, although any reason is a good one to spend all day in the garage putting down some cold ones and working on your car. thank you again with any luck by Sunday I can haul A** down the road an actually know how fast I'm going.
Ok gang. It's been awhile. With everything that was going on taking care of my mom's affairs and making a few needed mods to the Healey, it was June before anything really got rolling on this...
