Why don't you call or go to Moser for the seals???Maybe the axle diameter of there axles are different than the ones you had

if you have after market ends there may be no place to hold the ford seal .the big stock ford bearing is a taper bearing and used a over cap type seal that fits over the axel not housing tube if a small tube housing a seal out of a 70 mustang could work with 31 spline axles if there a place for it to seal ????Irish Diplomacy ..the ability to tell someone to go to Hell ,,So that they will look forward to to the trip

He has Moser axles and they are on the other side of Indianapolis from him---If he would call them they can give him the answer he needs, whether its just a part number or wrong applicatin--this is probably a case of mis matched components and or a poorly fabricated housing

Hotrod57; I have the 9" 31 spline .I have a O ring seal on the bearings.I talked to the mfgr. the possibilities of it leaking with just the O ring and he said he had no failures reported. He said if I was not comfortable with it to go and pick up the bearing seals(77 Torino) at Car Quest Pt# 473228 .I did feel uncomfortable with just the O ring and I put in the Seals he recommended. So far no problems.Don D

An O-ring will only seal a very closely machined part--2-3 thousands at the outside--If the housing ends were done in a wacko-any body can do this, I don't need any alignment tools----
Its going to leak

it was done in a alinement tool, the ends are factory ford torino style ends. without pulling the axle yet, i am guessing I probably nicked the oring, the leak is extremly small, I am going to replace the oring if I can just find it itself, if not, I will put alittle sealent in the housing where it is seated, since i will have the axle out anyways, I am going to put the factory axle seal in it, just to be on the safe side. I am getting ready to drive the car on a 1,000 + mile trip, don't want any problems on the road
besides my suitcase, you shoud see all the extra replacement parts I am taking with me, will be carring a extra axle seal, just in case. never had a problem with the car, but I want to be ready incase.
been planning this trip =driving my 39 chevy for a year now

The normal ford retaining plates had a gasket and a divit at the bottom so grease would drip out to the inside of the backing plate and not go into the brakes
When you pull the axels, don't turn the bearings untill you look at the bearings/orings carefully--you can probably see evidence of where the leak was (oring condition) and then determine if a little dab of rtv or similar will work--
Good luck on your trip

i would put a new bearing in it if your going 1000 miles with it and you may want to break the edge off the bearing housing with some sand paper so you do not shave the O ringLast edited by pat mccarthy; 03-08-2009 at 03:38 PM.
