Or use a socket that equals the o.d. of the retainer and tap the socket in the center with a hammer. That's the method I use when disassembling a motor. If you hit the socket hard enough with the head on the counter (not recommended in this case, only used on tear-down for a rebuild) the retainers will dis-lodge themselves and the whole mess will be loose with the retainers inside the socket if you're lucky. If not, one of the retainers will go airborn and begin orbiting another planet somewhere. You'll never find it.

yes i do it that way to on stocker . no sockets on any thing with titanium retainers a very small tap so you do not shoot the keepers to the moon(you hope) and spend 1/2 the day looking for them. if you use the socket that can happen more likely then not less you working on heads alot and you know are hard to wack them some of the stuff i play with is 250 to 350 just on the seat takes a good wack take paper towels and plug the head drain backs in case one keeper try s to get past the borderLast edited by pat mccarthy; 04-22-2009 at 04:04 PM.

OK, you have an outer spring with this flat coil piece then an inner spring it's three parts. When I shine the light in it you can see 2 springs and outer then this spiral flat spacer type thing then an inner spring.Last edited by Steel Warrior; 04-21-2009 at 10:17 PM. Reason: miss spelled work

Yes, a dual spring with a damper. The damper broke a piece out of it. I'm just getting tired and not thinking clearly. That's what I should of said in the first place. Just found out what it was called by looking in Comp cam catalog.Sorry!! Thanks
Thank you Roger. .
