welting and painting question
I maybe getting a little head of myself, but as I am waiting for the roof wood, I decided to move on to doing some body work getting it ready for Highbuild primer and paint.... right now it is under epoxy primer... I pulled the fenders off today and there was a lot of shavings that had rusted between the welting and the fender but didn't cause any damage to the body or fenders it just brushed right off... anyway my question is do I have to use the welting on the fenders, (I only have welting on the front fenders) and if not how many people do away with it.. I was going to paint the car with the fenders off, but I noticed as I loosened the bolts for the back fender and the running board the fender pulled about a half an inch away from the running board in the front..and maybe a 16th of an inch in the back closest to the body of the car.. my other question is if I was to paint the fenders off the car then install them will that mess the paint up such as crack it as the fender gets pulled to the running board... ? if so would it be better to paint the car with the fenders installed? anyones opinion would be appriciated ... the car is a model A
thanks,
simon

For the most part, I dislike fender welting so I put my AVATAR car together without welting though I do have some thin Teflon strips between the fenders and the body to stop wear rubs and squeeks. I made sure that I also sealed it underneath well to keep rain and crud out - but as yet haven't had it on the road for one major reason - the upholsterer has a full shop. I also painted it starting with a couple of good coats of epoxy. 2K, then my BC/CC.
A good many of the 'A's I've seen at shows don't have welting.Dave W

Did you paint the car with the fenders on or off the car? I am concerned since my rear fenders "pull" up to the running boards... and I don't know if that will cause the paint to crack if I painted them off the car then installed them...
thanks.

Mine pulled up to the RB's just fine, both the Wescott's 'glass in front and the steel in the back but I did spend a lot of fit up time on both. Most of the "new" urethane paints will flex a lot - and the fact that 'glass cars are a bit floppy, particularly the fenders, I wouldn't have any concernsDave W

Good that is what I wanted to hear ... I wanted to paint them off of the car so I could get good coverage on them and the body.... could you tell me where you got the strips you put under the fenders so they didn't rub? or have any suggestions what I may use?
thanks

The fenders were painted OFF of the car - IMO, is the only way to do it right
I have forgotten exactly which one I bought but I got it from these folks. My recollection is that it is the .75 stuff, 76475A33.

Another that I just saw are the .75 discs. 7801A33 down the page a bit further which might be better as you really only need this at the boltsDave W

When I put my car (avatar) together, I spent extra time on all the mating surfaces and put it together without any fender welt. I painted all the parts individually before I assembled the car, and then thanks to a paint mixing screw up (not mine) I painted the whole car again after it was assembled. It does not squeak, rattle, nor do anything weird without fender welt.Old guy hot rodder
Thank you Roger. .
