    455 Oldsmobile galley plug locations/Help

We are ready to start assembling my Son's 455 and are doing it today. We spent yesterday scrubbing and oiling all the parts that came back from the machine shop. However, we have a little question. We told the machine shop to leave out the brass freeze plugs as we are going to polish and install those separately after the engine is painted. They misunderstood, and left ALL the galley plugs out, even the ones inside the motor.

In the bag of new galley plugs we had a threaded one that goes deep inside from the rear (the machinist warned me to make sure that one was in or zero oil pressure) That one is in place now. There was also the large one that goes at the rear of the cam. There is also a 29/32 one we installed in the final hole in the bellhousing area.

In the front under the timing cover we have two screw in plugs, and we have installed those. That takes care of every hole, except for the 6 on the sides that we will put in after paint. The problem is, there are two more tap in style plugs left in the bag. One is about the size of a pencil eraser and the other has 15/16 stamped inside. Do they give you additional plugs in these kits to fit other applications, or did I miss where these go?

I can't call the machine shop til tomorrow and we are putting it together today. Any Olds experts out there? I tried going on line to find a schematic of Olds galley plug locations, no good. Thanks for any help.

Thanks Denny, just got in from the shop and this is the first chance I've had to reply. Yep, that plug with the little hole is in place. That is the one he warned me not to forget. I've also sort of figured out that those extra plugs are for different applications. I got a bag of the old plugs he took out back from him, and they were not in that group. I've looked at every hole, and can't see where any extra plugs would go.

Just to be safe I'll call the machine shop tomorrow. Also found out today that our once tight double roller timing chain is a little loose. I guess line boring makes the crank a little closer to the cam in some cases. Cloyes sells an undersize chain setup and I'm calling them tomorrow to get the lowdown. Am I on the right track with my reasoning?

Pat, they do make one for Olds, .005. They used to make .010, but dropped it (Cloyes) I spoke to Summit today, and am just going to call Cloyes tomorrow to get their feelings.

Good point about the end play, I'll check that next time we are at the shop. We did get rid of that rope rear seal Olds uses. Turns out a 460 Ford 2 piece rubber seal goes right in there. I picked up one today.
