Thread: Gm alternator wires

Well, as progress continues on my camaro, I keep finding loose ends that I did not anticipate. This time its an electrical problem. My alternator has no wires to plug into it. Can anyone tell me where to run wires so that my battery will charge? I am running a remanned alternator from an 84 camaro.

Here is a diagram of how it should be wired.....

#1 is battery post
#2 is ignition triggered
#3 is usually batt source through an idiot light,
can be attatched to the "Battery" post with no problem.
#4 is a hole which is used for testing the output. Sticking a little wire or small allen wrench during operation will full field the alternator and give you the reading of what the thing can put out for total amps and voltage.

Mopar, I don't think this diagram is correct. The 84 Camaro should have a self contained Alternator. This would negate your diagram showing a seperate voltage Regulator.

Josh, If you use Nitro instructions you are good to go.

So, numbers 1 and 3 should be ran directly to the positive battery post?

You can attach number 3 to number one (Batt term).
It's done a lot like that.
The biggest use for number 3 is to feed fuse block and ignition key feeds.
One thing you'll see on the alt case is the spade terminals are numbered 1 and 2.
For now, just use the pic to familiarize yourself and you'll be fine.

By the way, the pigtail ends (harness connector) for this installation are cheap and plentiful.
It will make the wiring job look good and go smoothly.
