Oil Leak in F250
OK, here is the deal.
I have an F250 Diesel 7.3
I run Royal Purple oil in it and have for awhile now. At about 2000 miles the filter starts leaking around the gasket. It has done this since it was new 120K miles ago and even when I had regular oil in it.
What gives, and why does it always start at about 2000 miles?Steve

I'm not familiar with the 7.3 engines too much.....Is there some sort of mount for the filter housing that could possibly be warped or cracked???? Perhaps the oil takes that long to thin out before it can seep out????? The Powerstroke in my toter has over 150,000 miles on it, and has yet to drip a drop of anything!!!! btw, the engine has always been on Rotella 15W-40....not my oil of choice, but what a (generous) race sponsor supplies.....Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, Live for Today!

No royal purple------use the 15-40 oils that were made for the diesels--Shell Rotella, Delvac, etc
My present truck approaching 300k and no problems with oil filter area but did have loose fitting at fi pump that leaked pretty bad until I changed fitting and o ring

Dave,
It looks to me like it is part of the block itself. I suppose it could be a conductor of sorts. I know it has to have something to screw onto, right?
I don't know if the filter gasket is just petering out because of the engine heat or what. When I change the oil and filter (oil at 10K, filter every 5K miles) the gasket looks like it has been worked to death.
Another note:
When I install the filter, I only turn it hand tight plus about 1/4 to 1/2 turn. I also don't use a filter wrench, but basically it is as tight as I can turn it by hand.
So, am I over tightening it on install, or may bot tightening it enough?
Sometimes when I take it off to change it, I can get get it off with just my hands and a rage wrapped around it. Sometimes I have to drive a screwdriver through it and turn it to get it off. Either way, it still leaks.
Also, it is not a pouring type of leak, it just drips. That is the worst kind.Steve

Royal Purple has a product made just for our diesels. It is a great product.
The truck gets better mileage, and is ten fold more quiet than with regular oil. Also, synthetic oil does not "mix" with water, so if there is a problem oil still gets to the important parts.
The oil is not the problem, it has to do with the filter, or rather the filter gasket, or the way it is mounted.
It did the same thing when I used to run Delo 400 15W-40 in it.Steve
