Ford 9" Spline Change?
I have a Ford 9" Traction Loc 3rd member for 31 spline axles. Can this be changed to use 28 spline axles? I'd like to use it (in my '48 F1) in a '71 F100 rearend that has the 28 spline axles. The '71 has the right hub-to-hub length, and the spring perches are located for direct bolt-in to the '48.Leo Life is not measured by the breaths you take, but by the RODS that take your breath away.

Why? Why don't you buy new 31 splin axles for the other rearend?
The 31's are stronger than the 28's, why would you want to weaken the rearend by doing that? If your gonna do that, I would just leave the other rear end in there if it still works. Just my two cents. Kurt

Kurt....I'd like to use the 31 splines, but I was told the 31 spline axle has a larger bearing, and won't fit the '71 rear end. I guess I need to check into that a bit further. My 3rd member is coming out of a 1989 F-150, and that unit is about 5-6 inches too wide for my '48 F1, and the spring perches would have to be relocated as well. The '71 rear end that fits right in is a non-posi. I stiil haven't decided whether or not to do a leaf spring set-up, or a 4-link.Leo Life is not measured by the breaths you take, but by the RODS that take your breath away.

What is the rear end housing's are the both the same?
I know a guy that takes 28 spline and mill's it to a 31 spline.
So I think you could buy axles for it, if the housing's are the same.
Someone correct me if I am wrong Please. Kurt

Kurt...I won't have the '71 housing until Monday, but I was told that housing has smaller smaller bearings and there is likely not enough meat to open the housing for the larger bearings used with the 31 spline axles, without weaking it significantly.Leo Life is not measured by the breaths you take, but by the RODS that take your breath away.

My bad roofcam I thought if the housing's were the same you could use your third member and some shorter axles or cut down axles. Kurt
