8.8 & 9' rears
What fords came with the 8.8" & 9" rears? I want to replace the 10 bolt (out of a 66 GTO) rear with either one of the two. I haven't even put my coupe on the road yet and already thinking of changing rears; I'm thinking the 10 bolt won't last long behind a 461 and m20 muncie. Right now the 10 bolt is 53 3/4" between backing plates and I am hoping the ford rears are a little narrower. Also, which of the two would be stronger. Thanks in advance for the help.
Jack.

8.8s are cheaper and easier to find around here. cars at the strip are pulling SERIOUS times with a modded 8.8. weld the axle housings, run a girdle and forget about it. rangers i think are around 52 backing plate to backing plate. i have one at the shop i can measure but hopefully some one chimes in. my axle is hard to get at now. only down fall is the pinion is offset to one side by about 6-8 inches if i remember right. any f150 with a locker (not sure about open diff) with an 8.8 runs a 31 spline. as well as locker explorers. fx4 rangers in around 2003 ran a 31 spline torsen locker with 4.10s.

Lots of 8.8's around, they can be beefed up to almost as tough as a 9". But they are uglier than a nice smooth 9".
