Dry film lubricant and thermal barrier coatings
I'm re-building a 8BA Flathead and I'm wondering if dry film lubricants or thermal barrier coatings would be of any benefit to a flathead or any other engine for that matter. I ran across a turn-key flathead site that uses a thermal barrier coating on the intake and exhaust passages. Is this just a sales pitch?
What about dry film lubricants. I'm rebuilding original Johnson adjustable lifters. Would there be a benefit to coating them? What about valve stems, cams, or other engine parts?
I'm just gathering information for this and future builds and I'm fishing for information.

It's not a sales pitch, it works. But, IMO it's not needed for a stocker to "putt around town". Now if your building a high performance motor and are going to thrash it to within an inch of it's life, go for it.
I work just down the street from EMBEE PERFORMANCE in Santa Ana, CA and they coat new pistons with different kinds of thermal coatings "by the palate". They do the coating for all of the custom piston makers in Orange County.

buy some good oil with zddp in it that works alot better then some of the coatings .i used the coated bearings and pistons for dry lubricants in hi NOs engines. my feelings are mix on alot of it .as for a thermal barrier coating i may still do it. for valve guides i use manganese bronze it is some what a zinc bronze alloy so its self ludricanting that alot better then any stem coating IMOLast edited by pat mccarthy; 11-04-2009 at 02:56 PM.
