    Help with Magnesium Wheels

    I need some help ......

I have a set of 1972 (ford) PANTERA factory 8" & 7" wheels that I'd planned on using on my 46 coupe.

My needed help is ......... I want to widen the rears (8") to 12".

Anyone know a source for this?

I can get them cut in two on the side I want to add material two & if anyones seen my welding work I not a novice but ....... no experience with magnesium.

    HELP ...... I want a wider rear wheel ......

part the rim on a lathe make up a ring hoop weld it face rim in a lathe. tack the rim back on the the hoop weld it you will need to check run out before welding it all he way . you will need to find some mag i know a guy that cast rims and makes rim out of mag you may get him to sell you a hoop you could weld in if he will talk to you about selling some mag. if you could get a rim drop. part it were you want it then you would have just one welld take some time no big deal if you have a lathe that will swing the size of your rim . mag tigs good from what i have seen .hey let see some of your tig welds i do alum ok much better with steel

I've seen Pauls welds on bike parts he makes. Maybe in my next life I will come back with 1/2 of the welding skills he has. I'd even settle for 1/4.

Stockton Wheel = has lots of negative feedback, in the VW circles.

Eric Vaughn = IS THE GUY! He narrowed some front Porsche wheels for my racing buddy and they were NICEl.

The wheels on a Pantera were Campagnolo. If it were me, I would not cut up a very nice Campy wheel. I never knew they were Mag, and not aluminum? You will need to get the coating off before welding.

Thanks guys ...... I'll make contact.

As for the campy's ..... they are nice .... cept some knucklehead blasted them & removed the original color. So already they aren't worth as much ... I could clean them & powder them back but the logo is missing on all except the spare.

    They are really only worth about 6 bones on the market ....... a limited market. Good thing is I have 5 of them ... 2 - 7" & 3 - 8" .

I've let everyone know what gives .....

Oh ...... that's not the right set of wheels ......

Oh Don ..... you make me blush ....... I wish I could get a steady gig burning aluminum rod....

Well Ken .... I called & spoke to Eric ....... His thoughts are what I suspected when I decided I wanted a wider rear wheel ..... prognosis ..... NOT GOOD.

I've welded steel,C/M,/hastelloy & many exotic metals BUT never magnesium. He has. Not onl has he welded it but machined it. So ........ in his humble opinion he said leave the wheels alone. Magnesium has some funky tendencies that I'd rather not try.

Again - Thanks for the direction.

I'm on the hunt for new wheels with a little more width.

Glad you've come to a conclusion. Just a comment here for posterity sake as these threads are often found on Google/Bing searches.

Eric Vaughan is a straight up guy, lots of experience and honest. Knows alloy wheels inside and out.

Stockton Wheel will tell you one thing to get you to ship your wheels to them, then do and charge something else.............never again will they get a shot at my wallet. Buyer beware.
