Air bags deployed -whats next ?
Daughter had a small no damage fender bender, both air bags deployed cracking the windshield . Mechanic put car on lift and sees no damage ,windshield replacement will be 175.00 . Tires are almost new and car was running fine b fore accident. Insurance co is going to total it and she will get 1800.00 , which wont buy her much , certinaly not as good as she allready had. She can buy it back for 209.00 . I'm going to state DMV tomorrow to see whats involved with getting a new title on a car that has been totaled . Have searched around and there seems to be different opinions on the air bags . She can not afford to have them replaced and I'm sure the air bag replacement cost is why they are totaling it . Any body had any experience with air bags not being replaced being a problem .Failing to plan is planing to fail

Air bag deployment will also cause the seat belt retractors to lock permanently and they will also have to be replaced.
A salvage title can be obtained and will indicate that the car was at one time totaled. It might also be difficult to sell a vehicle with a salvage title.
You might think twice about letting your daughter drive around without airbags. The next accident may not be a low speed fender bender.
Just my opinion.

yeah, really---welcome to the age of disposable cars... All the nice "crumple zones" can easily turn a 30 mph collision into a couple of totaled cars...... I guess that's an improvement, right???Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, Live for Today!

It's legal to replace the airbags in most states, not all thought! New York you have to have them checked out before you can install them, but they have no where to do it! It's their way of not letting you. Make sure the battery is disconnected!!!
And there is no law saying you can't drive a car that they have deployed in.
I have never come across a seat belt that has locked up, from a accident.

follow up
Thanks for come backs . I went to Delaware DMV yesterday and they go by the Fed regs. There is a cut off date , cars older than the date CAN be titled as a salvaged vehicle and DO NOT need air bags replaced . cars newer than the date must have the drivers bag replaced . I left there with the date 1997 in my brain ,when I got home I had a senior moment and couldn't remember if it was 1997 and older or 19977and newer . as my daughters car is a 1997 I need to know exactly . So hat in hand and trying not too look too stupid I am going back to DMV today and get it right this time . They also suggested before I buy the car back from the ins co I run it thru the inspection lane to make sure it will pass inspection .Last edited by luckyfasteddie; 02-10-2010 at 11:15 AM.

If your wife has a friend that annoys you don't tell your wife to stop being friends with her. Just casually mention how pretty she is... .
