Well garstar, I happen to have a sun tach, It would help me to know what distrib. your running, but take for instance GM HEI, it is the simplest for wiring a tach, all ya have to do is plug in the green wire to the tach terminal, Blue is the for the back lighting of the tach, and u all ready have red & black figured out.

what happens when you rev the engine a little? that might give u an indicaton of whats happening, but that thing should be idileing at like 550 anyway, it could even be a little slow, i have a carb. 355 and it will sometimes idle a little downstairs.

the moral of the story is check your green wire connection, and possably refer to the coil manufacurers manual, it should say where and how to hook a tach to it.

hope this helps, sorry if I was cap. obvious
