    Steering column wiring

Hi I am rewiring my 40 Ford with a Painless wiring harness.
My car has an older GM tilt steering column without the ignition switch on the column.
The problem is that the previous owner of the car did not retain the factory multi plug for the wires coming out of the column.
The colour codes on the wires do not mach the colour codes specified in the harness instructions or the information I have found on the Internet.
The colour codes on the wires on my column is as follows:
    Grey
    Black/light blue (blue)
    Black/dark blue (blue)
    Blue
    Brown
    Purple/yellow
    Black/yellow
    Black/white
    Green
Can anybody help me to figure out what wire goes where?

    Thank you
    Vegard

you can verify their functions by using a volt meter or test light if unsure.

Thanks for your quick replies. Always good responses on this forum.
My problem is that the colour codes on my steering column are not the same as the colour codes on the links that you provided.
Keith: how do I check it with a volt meter (ohm meter) if I don’t know how it is suppose to function? What cables are supposed to be connected when the turn signal is to the right etc. and what is suppose to happen when the brake light is on? I don’t have anything hooked up to the steering column that means no 12V in.

    Thanks
    Vegard

Do you have any idea the year and make of your column? GM did make a change somewhere in the '70s or early '80s. Or - gasp - is it possibly another brand like Ford/MoPar??

It is a GM tilt column without ignition switch, (with shifter) does that mean it is from before 73? I think so. My problem is that the colours on the wiring do not correspond with the info I have on GM columns.
I really appreciate that you guys are helping me with this.
    Thanks

In that case - and the diagrams and information that Pat Monaco, the Chevy Forum and I have given you are all that can be found - it looks like you will have to take tudorkeith's recommendation of checking it out with a battery powered tester. Sorry, but it looks like you have a 'bastardized' aftermarket replacement signal switch

I have the column out of my '68 El Camino and the wire colors go:
    black-blue stripe
    blue
    brown
    puple
    black-yellow stripe
    green
    black-white stripe
