questions about swapping columns in 66 GMC

I ordered a turn signal switch for my GMC and it is no where near being the right one..... anyone know where I can find info on columns.. it works and fits but local ossifer thinks it is wrong for me to signal wid my arm...... original switch has metal brg support and replacement is all plastic and no where near fitting?? any suggestions???
    thanks
