what does it mean to double clutch?

It means 2 push the clutch 2 times when shifting.You don't know what you've got til it's gone

what's the purpose, and when exactly do you press the clutch.

A lot of the old stuff 30's thru 50's even into the 60's specially trucks where hard ta change gears cuzz of the lack of synchro's
so you would get her movin and when ya went to 2nd you'd push the clutch in bring the shifter to nuetral let the clutch out so the in put shaft would gain engine speed push the clutch back in and go on to second. That about right STREETS ???

Thought that was bout right from drivin them log wagons when I worked for a tree company a oh so long ago when I was 16....

That's exactly how I gotta drive my ole A, with the original box, makes for some good fun....
