Hi all I have a 36 plymouth coupe hot rod with a chevy rear (limited slip),, somtimes when i go around a corner i get this loud clunking noise (ping or bang) and i think its coming from the rear..i took off the rear cover and do not see any teeth missing on any of the gears, also back of car seams to wobble a little when going very slow around corners.housing is defenetly not moving on perches.(leaf spring are new and secure ).but dont think axles are bent..any ideas? thank you

Could possibly be the cross pin and C-Clips are worn excessively..When the C-Clips break, the axle falls out!!!!! Another possibility would be the posi unit itself, what kind is it? Some are noisy when they work good!

in 76 my new trans am had a simler problem had a clicking sound since it was new.i took in to the dealer and they changed the entire rear assy.a few months later the noise is back. the service manager told me that gm had a new limited slip oil and that had no whale oil in it.he told me to go to my parts store and buy some old type of l/s oil with whale oil,i did and never had any more trouble.

I had plenty of posi's that would bounce a little in tight turns or corners ut never made a clicking like you dicribed. I would be checking the c clips like Dave said, sounds like that thing may be getting ready to loose an axle. Now I have had clicking sounds from the brakes because of a broken brake spring, but that should not cause a wobble.

I know it sounds horrible, but don't panic. I agree with hotrodstude. He nailed it.

Sounds like clutch chatter in the limited slip clutches. If the gear lube is new or synthetic oil (85w-90), go to a GMC or Chevy dealers parts counter, ask for Limited Slip Diff Additive. It's about a 4 oz bottle. Add it to the diff, then go to a large parking lot. Make tight circles (right and left turns) or figure 8's for about 10 minutes.
The additive is a special lube that clings to the clutches, the tight turns help to "open up" the clutch pack to get the lube into the pack.
I know it sounds crazy, but it really works. GM has had many bulletins about rear diff noises and this fix. I think the tight turns works better than figure 8's, but I've seen it work both ways. Sometimes you need to perform it more than once. Mall or Supermarket parking lots on an early Sunday morning are ideal. D

Bad wheel bearing. You definitely can get clunking noises, and sometimes grinding noises...
