    dimmer switch problem

    Good morning to all.

I own a 1962 ford thunderbird convertible which recently I have no low beam. These our halagen lights all four of them. When I engage the dimmer to high all four lights come on when I press the floor switch to lower beam they all shut off. This is what I have done so far. Test the light plug circuit I have voltage there. Tested the female plug that gets attached to the dimmer switch and have 12 volts there. Went to nappa and bought another dimmer switch still no low beam lights. Even jumped the dimmer by hooking the positive lead to the positivemale prong of the switch and started to touch the outside prongs on the switch itself still nothing. Could it be posiable the the nappa store switch was faulty. Need some help. If anyone knows olms lay I would like to hook my DVM up to the dimmer by itself and test those leads. I no the two to the outside our the hi and low and the middle prong is the hot one. Larry

Believe it or not, many of those problems can be traced to the directional light circuit (I worked at a dealership for a short time between "real" jobs and we replaced literally dozens of those '61-'65 directional switches). Then of course there's that firewall plug and or wires that occasionally gets crusty

you probably got the wires on the wrong terminals--buy a standard old fashioned hi beam and put the wires on it to see if it works--that will prove the wiring

or maybe the amp load is tripping the relay/breaker

Did they work before, and now have stopped or is this a new conversion to halogens you are working on? I'm not trying to be a wise a** here, but have you confirmed that your low beam bulbs are good? I had a neighbor a few years back that worked all afternoon trying to figure out his lack of low beams, only to find out that he had apparently been running on one light for weeks, and when that one went out he had no lights. He replaced both headlights and all was good again.

Enjoy the little things in life, and you may look back one day and realize that they were really the BIG things.
