Help! w/Power steering
I just replaced the hoses on my Lincoln hydro boost power steering and when I went to bleed the system the steering "took over" and turns one way with lots of force until reaching the end then procedes the other way with force and back and forth and back and forth. Just got the dang car with no fluid or power steering cause the hose was broke when I got it, so I have no prior history with this car. I even tried reversing the hoses and it did the same thing. Just for clarity I replaced the two hoses that run to and from the steering gear itself (the part that looks like a cross between a rack and pinion unit and a dampner shock)
Is this a symptom of a bad steering gear or control valve? Thanks for any help, at a loss here.Justin RFFR

Yeah, this thing is cavatating all the way right, and as soon as it hits the end of rotation it rotates all the way left and continues. Almost broke my fingers, I'm pretty sore an swole. It happened the second I touched the wheel to bleed it, I just tried bleeding it with the engine off and am a little sore to start it up to find out if it worked. We'll see.Justin RFFR

Does the hydroboost on your lincoln also run your power brakes?? Hydroboost is used mainly for power brakes, but have seen some that run both brakes and steering.

yes the Steering pump feeds presure for the brake booster and the power steering gear. So its all fer one one fer all, or none fer all in this case. Got the air out and it is still turning on its own and groanin and howling. I think maybe there is a blockage some where from the previous owner runnin it dry. mighta cooked it good, but I know nothin on these and am having trouble finding links to well illistrated breakdowns and troubleshooting.Justin RFFR

Hose's are definatley crossed, but might be the 2 under the car at the p.s. slave to cylinder, maybe someone was messing with em before you got it,but I gaurantee somewhere they are crossed, and be carefull cuzz that steering wheel will beat ya up till ya get it right, also on the slave unit there is a cover plate with 2 screws ya can take off and there will be an adjuster nut if it dont track just right, basically it adjusts center on the slave.....Last edited by HWORRELL; 02-23-2004 at 02:41 PM.

Do you know if they use a "shuttle valve"? Will get under there again and track all the hoses from the pump on down. You aint kiddin about gettin beat up, that things a bear. Thanks for the help and I'll keep ya'll posted. Gotta get it sorted out or I'm not using it as a sub donor, wich would be a bummer cause that 302 really moves after I tuned er up and fixed the gas problem. You all have managed to help me keep my composure and not get discouraged enough to set fire to all my projects and move to Alaska.Justin RFFR
