Brake Plumbing w/AN fittings
I am ready to plumb my brake lines and have a question regarding AN fittings. I will be using SS lines, are aluminum AN fittings OK to use or should they be steel?

If you can I would use stainless fittings, steel would be my second choice.

x 2, I would steer clear of the aluminium fittings and use stainless.

I'm using zinc plated steel on my 50 wagon. SS is $$$ and you must use antiseize on all the threads.
Aluminum can also be used but over-tightening can happen too easy.
Tip........when using AN make sure you have the proper 37deg flare when you make up the lines.

Not sure but seems that aluminum fittings are not D.O.T. approved. Also check your brake flex lines as they need to be D.O.T., some braided steel lines are not.

AN fittings and hoses ARE aerospace specs-----tell DOT to go to hell

If I still had a relatively low cost source (where I used to work
) I would use nothing but Swagelok fittings on just about any tubing. All the lines on my '30 A-bone were Swagelock 316 stainless. No flares necessary! They're widely used in the chemical processing and natural gas industries.
As for DOT, I've registered hot rods in Virginia, Nebraska and Kansas. No one ever questioned a braided steel brake hose, AN or Swagelok fitting. DOT standards writers often have cranial rectitus.Last edited by Henry Rifle; 11-02-2010 at 02:31 PM.

I used all SS brake lines and SS fittings on my '34. Would definitely not use aluminum fittings with SS lines. Be prepared though, the SS fittings are definitely high dollar.

aluminum AN fittings are just fine....used em forever with no probs...plus they are lighter...most brake lines and fittings of the AN variety are #3 or #4....the sky aint gonna fall if you use alum
