77 ford truck steering column help

I have a 77 ford truck steering column in my f100, and for some reason the column does not "lock" into the gear. The shift linkage is correct, but ithink there is a problem with the column itself. Like it seems like there is no spring left to keep it locked into the gear, so it can just move: front to back as it pleases.
Any ideas on how to fix this?

Sounds like it might have something to do with the shift collar. You can order replacement parts through vendors like this one http://www.blueovaltruckparts.com/i-...2WD---4WD.aspx or just go to the salvage yard and get another column. If you look for '78 or 79 you might also find a tilt column that will bolt right in.
    Hope this helps.
