Shop Gatherings
I'm hosting three gatherings at my shop this winter. If any are in the No Virginia/W va/Maryland/Pennsylvania corner you are invited to join in. This is a no cost gathering featiring skilled people demonstrating areas of expertise.
The first gathering is next Sunday, Jan 30th and we'll have Don Beard (engine builder, world champion drag boat racer) explaining cam installation, degreeing, locating TDC, advance/retarding the cam, use of a degree wheel and any other ohv engine questions we can think of. In the afternoon Bill Anderson (restoration specialist) will do the valve train geometry of a flattie, demonstrating the special tools required and how to make valvetrain adjustments and any other things we can think of. Demonstrations will be done on a SBC and 21stud ford.
The 2nd gathering, tentavely scheduled the 2nd sunday in Feb will be all about working with metal. We'll go into basic metal stretching, shrinking, planishing use of a shot bag and basic hand tools; Tom Mancuso will demonstrate leading a joint; John Herold (PPG paint guy) will discuss prepping the surface for paint.
The 3rd gathering, tent sch for the 2nd sunday in March will have different work shops going on at the same time featuring: carb technology and rebuild; ignition systems; brake systems; lever shock rebuild; rear gear setup; TIG welding and different machine operation for those who are thinking about getting a lathe etc.
We are still looking for qualified folks to lead some of the 3rd gathering shops (esp brake and ignition) so if you can help out shoot me a email.
In brief, this is a no-cost oppertunity to break the cabin fever to get together with other rodders and have some fun while learning or teaching a thing or two.
My shop is:

607 E. Main St.
Berryville, VA 22611

North Virginia??????
sounds like you will have a good time and I bet that you'll have a crowd--
We hosted a shop "crawl" for the Cobra guys after one of their Snake n Eggs in February a few years ago---18*below zero and we had a crowd of around 40--some even considered driving but good sense won out----or they froze to death and didn't get there
And the carb stuff will have all eyes on what your doing

Jerry, i sure wish you could come out and share some of your knowledge. I can't afford your plane fare, but i can offer a good meal. I bet you remember Bobby Hilton? the last driver of Jim & Allison Lee's TF dragster? he said he is driving his coupe (the one from the Detroit Autorama) up here. Hard telling what them boys from PA and MD will bring down, you know they ain't right in the head - they talk all year about driving thier traditionals thru the mud in turn 2 of the Jalaopy Showdown.

The name is familiar, but I don't exactly remember( will be 70 Mar13) but I think they held the NHRA national record before we got it back in early 70s-----Back then you could only do record at a divisional points race or the final 2 rounds at Indy---and it had to be backed up within a hour so the conditions for making 2 runs in a top fueler was pretty much impossible to do--we got it by using the record backup staging lanes at Fremont and a Pratt and Witney aircraft starter to start the engine---couldn't use the push start lanes as you had to wait your turn to go and on the west coast there were so many fuelers that you'd be in the lanes for ever---

Its' that coarse woolen underwear you Michiganors wear that makes you unfriendly, come on down here it is a balmy mid teen, you know - long sleeve shirt weather for you.
But, thanks, i hope we have a good turnout and have some fun. And, i have a ton of respect for you Michiganors, when i'm fishing the Manistee i'm told that you can't wear a light jacket until after Thanksgiving or you're a woose. For those of you that aren't aware, when fishing up there (not that far from Pat) at the end of Sept there is ice in the bottom of the boat and frequent snow.

A brief followup, we got together yesterday - braved the snow and weather. About 20-25 folks showed up and we just had a ball, Bill Anderson was unable to do the flathead but Don Beard spent extra time with the ohv motor and all the questions promted indepth discussions. Thanks to generous sponsors we were able to provide coffee and donuts and a huge lunch.
The guys came from drag race to hot rod to restoration purists and even a land speed motorcycle guy and it was very interesting to learn what was important to each and how different things apply. If any of you are in a position to attend or evan start sessions like what we are doing i urge you to do so. We all had a great time.
Ok gang. It's been awhile. With everything that was going on taking care of my mom's affairs and making a few needed mods to the Healey, it was June before anything really got rolling on this...
