    Steering gear Q

I have a 1968 bronco that someone added power steering to. It works good, but the box has a leak and I want to replace it.
I was told it had a GM steering box, but looking at it, I might be seeing a fomoco stamped in it, not sure though.
The thing is it has the pitman arm down tube thing of the opp side as your usual steering gear.
I pulled some numbers off it
(on a tag on the box) CF B1
    on body of box W9 05-AR 3580-a

If you can give me any ideas, that would be awesome.

    Thanks!

Can you take a couple of pictures of the box and post them?

Your steering box should look like the one below........kind of a strange duck. There are a bunch of them on Ebay, like this one:

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1966-...item5197861db4

Not trying to spend your money, but if it were me I would bite the bullet and spring for the money to just buy a new or rebuilt proper steering box and be done with it. My logic is that steering is one of the two things you can't take chances with (brakes being the other ) and it is so much easier to just buy the proper part, install it, rather than trying to modify something else to work. Your time is worth money too.

Actually no, the pitman arm part is on the wrong side.

I agree, steering is not something to cheap out on. However, at this time the PO has welded a different bracket system in to mount the box (as well as a different steering column and this and that and ugh, it is a $1000+ job to put it back stock), and I don't have the skills to unmodify it at this point. I have carfully inspected and tested the setup, and it works flawlessly, so I am stuck with it at this point.
I'll attach some pics in a few min

No... I don't think that is it. Here is a pic.

I agree that steering is not a place to cheap out, but somone did a very good job installing this system. I have inspected and tested this offroad... extensivly and it has done exellent.

I might be wrong about the pitman arm being the opposite way, I have only dinked with steering on old f-series.

    Redtail,
So are you saying you've got a 1968 Bronco, which you can easily get the right OEM parts for, but a previous Owner cobbled on a GM (or some other) steering box just because he could, you bought the Bronco and now you're wanting to fix a leak on that "other" box? Is this an offroad only rig, or is this your driver?

    it is a toy.
To get back to stock I need a steering column, as well as the box and other odds/ends. Not to mention that the frame mounts have been modifed with a welder to fit this other box in. I can bolt a working system up, or weld it back to stock with skills I don't have. About a grand of stuff all in all. I was hoping to fix it for about 200

Mainly an off road toy, or a general use toy? Just wondering what we're looking at here, being that my DD is a mildly lifted Jeep.

I'm not even sure yet. It has not been on the road in 25 yrs. I just got it and woke it up after a long snooze. I have only been using it offroad recently. want to get it where I am not bleeding fluids all over the place. This thing is going to be a weekend warrior at best for the street.
I have other things to drive as DD's, this thing gets WAAAAY to much attention to be a DD.

The top looks dry. Is it leaking at the pitman arm shaft. If so you may just need to replace the seal.

It has sat since 1986, and had been used for 5 yrs or so prior to that.

for shiz and giggles I looked on the auto zone site, and I think the unit is a 1970 2wd f series steering box.

    Do you think so?

It does look like the one in my '74 Ford. Bear in mind that Ford used two different style boxes in those trucks, if you go wrecker diving be sure to get the right one, they don't directly interchange. Different length columns, for one thing.
