Desk Top Engine Dyno
Can anyone recomend a good desk top engine dyno.
I would like one that could tell you 1/8 & 1/4 mile times
plus differant cams valves compressions HP Torques.
This differant componates on the engine to see what will work best
like intakes carbs headers and so on.
You guys know what I am talking about./
Just a decent Engine dyno for building engines thanks. That way I don't have to be bugging everyone else for ansers I can check out my self.
Thanks again; Kurt

Richard (Tech1) has one and did a workup on my 331, so he should be able to help when he sees this.

Thanks Don. I'm currently using a DynoSim 4.2 with Pro Tools which I bought a couple of years ago. There is now an upgraded DynoSim 5 with Pro Tools. If I were going to purchase a software dyno today, I would purchase that one and also CamDisk8. If you want to use only CompCams in your builds, they will plug right in once you have the part number you want to try in the motor, but I have found that by not having the cam software, I have to do a lot of shopping for different grinds and then hand-enter them. If you just want to see how quick and how fast a car can go with X horsepower, there are many calculators online to do that. You need only horsepower and car weight. If you want to play with components in the chassis and change setups to see what the result would be, then you would want to purchase either DragSim5 with Pro Tools or DeskTop Drag5.

Yes he is Don; thanks.
I was looking at the Virtual engine dyno but I hate to throw money away and it won't do what I want it to. They do give you a free calculater and do several differant thing.
I am realy more worried about getting the engine HP and Torque with differant carbs intakes came heads and stuff like that. I want to see what differant cam makers put out for power range, torque and HP. Isky looks real good to me but I want to match them up against comp cams, erson, Lunuti and other to see what cam I really want to use.
Thanks Tech. Kurt

i have the pro sim dyno 5 i like to put my cams in so skip the cam disc. the only thing i do not care for is the head flow charts are out of date so i have to shop around for them flow numbers.this is a gray area any way still good entertainmentIrish Diplomacy ..the ability to tell someone to go to Hell ,,So that they will look forward to to the trip

How much did that pro simsdyno 5 run you Pat???

Thanks Pat, for mentioning heads. I forgot to explain that, but what I do is find the published flow data from Stan Weiss or from the manufacturer or from another independent shop that has flowed the heads. I factor those numbers by either 0.90 or 0.95, depending on how much I think the fellows who flowed them are skewing the numbers and enter them into the DynoSim manually. It's the only way I have found to be REAL about the outcome. When push comes to shove, I think the only ones you have to worry about really tweaking the numbers is the manufacturers. Bigger numbers sells more heads. I factor Edelbrock down by 10% (0.90) because of the feedback from engine builders who dyno test motors with Eddy heads.
There are lots of tricks to embellish the flow numbers, you just have to figure out what the flow bench operator did, such as using a 4.200" barrel to flow a small block Chevy head. The vast majority of the cylinders on these motors that Johnny Hotrod is building will be less than that and so you just have to factor the numbers down a little toward realistic. There are other tweaks, such as multiple valve angles, undercut valve stems, bowl blending, wet/dry flow, etc., etc. that may be hidden in the numbers.
In short, it's not just a matter of getting the software and putting it on autopilot. You have to play with it and tweak the numbers to get anything near realistic. I think I have it down pretty close now and can generally get to within 2% or less of the readings from a "real" dyno. Being that close can allow you to change components and trust what happens as a result.PLANET EARTH, INSANE ASYLUM FOR THE UNIVERSE.

I will be doing lots of tweaking with differant carbs intakes and camshefts, not to mention compression ratio's for differant cc heads/ valves sizes.
I like the broad power range cams that have lots of torque.
I don't care for these cams that make power for 2 thousand rps and then drop off the face of the earth.

well i have had real world numbers .like you said its a tool how you use it and what you plug in may not be what you will see could be more or less .i run numbers thru for cam power band thats about all i us it for .has for head flow i have a guy that flows my heads then we get serous .for dyno numbers. i low ball some of this stuff so i round down . there things i do that the dyno sims can not see that i feel that makes power . i can say that i have lost jobs from guys thinking they where going to get 650+ hp with a mild pump gas bbc under $5000. with no real world dyno time ? i am sure some guy told him he could get 750hpIrish Diplomacy ..the ability to tell someone to go to Hell ,,So that they will look forward to to the trip

well it is all of you feel by the seat of your paints and then some if in tune mild 800s like i said before i ran the numbers and built it i ran a hand full of old builds that i knew what they ran like so i did run yours as well i will PM you if you want the TQ and HP it is not bad for a small stock bbc on pump gas engine with stock headsIrish Diplomacy ..the ability to tell someone to go to Hell ,,So that they will look forward to to the trip

800 Hp.WOW!!!!Not bad for a small BB with pump gas and stock heads.
I will take your word for it as the gospel, and I can assure you that I
will never see or feel all the HP, as my nerve isn't so good anymore.
