You will probably never need it Dave, Really comes into its own when welding for long periods or high amps on Aluminium. For tight areas use a Gas lens

Dave I have the thumb wheel to although i very rarely use it, the foot pedal just gives you so much more control, i often use my head, knee etc etc to operate it, even been known to have it between my knees

Lack of mobility, decreased range of motion are the two main reasons I'm going to build the new rotisserie with a hydraulic motor to rotate it remotely, easier for me to turn the car into position rather then try to turn my body into position!!!!!

New tig welder I am, for me the thumb wheel was just award, so foot peddle made part of the learning easier. The biggest pain was grinding the tungsten, I am telling you I could not strike an arc without needing to regrind the electrode when I lifted. Spent as much time, actually more shaping the electrode. So I hit the net to seek the answer, cause I was getting no where fast and having tungsten breakfast.

Long story short, I found a dead nuts way to get it and takes less the a minuet. In fact the tip is so good I welded today for a couple of hours and only needed to regrind 3 times.

If interested this is what I found, use a drill with a speed control. Insert the electrode, hold up to the grinding wheel. Form the angle, when that appears slow the drill speed down to get the grind marks going in a straight line. Damn simple and sure helped me. Best tip I have pick up yet, now on to that stack of nickels ........... That will be a long time form now. LMAF

I do like how well the welds look and the penetration is amazing, that is some intense heat going on, nice welder the tig machine.. Cannot wait to get the dance correct, I do see it will be quicker then the mig, the weld puddle you can control and have the time to see it in action.

i grind tungsten on the belt sander i do ok .you need to back up the torch from getting to close to the puddle but it happens some time were you dip in the puddle then the tungsten needs a tune up .. it is a time deal the more you weld you become part of your machine .. i been told that good penmanship helps with tig and thats why some women can weld circles around many guys. i started weldeding with gas when i was 12 years old so tig was not a big jump . i do know a guy that builds air planes has a thumb wheel. my machine i have a low amp setting so i can crank start up to half the amps i need to weld some thing so it is not like starting from zero so when using the thumb wheel your not moving it so much. i have seen many of the welds the guy that builds planes as done over the years . i done some my self over the years .on my best day and there is alot less of them. i can not touch him . there some guys that weld good and some that are way above that .one guy they call the machine that is unreal .around here there some very unreal welders . here is a guy that can weld . john marcella ..Marcella Manifolds should find him on the net and photos of his handy work .Caution after looking at his welds you may want to beat your welder flat or pick up knitting

I was a farm boy/mecanic who could weld with sticks and acelene, baling wire, barb wire cut off a fence, etc---went to work for airlines----did some more stuff--started flying, finally got to west coast---after seeing the welding (and other stuff) done out there----there was no comparison back east----since then, I've wanted to be able to weld like Don Long(chassis builder) but don't do enough to get more than 2 or 3 ripples before I screw up the appearance of the weld------------
