I'd say changing the cam duration is farther down on the list than carb jets. Based on what you're saying, I think I would first confirm that there are no seeping fittings, check the float level, see if it's percolating on shutdown and consider a phenolic spacer, and look at the carb jets to be sure it's not running rich at idle & mid-range. George, let us know what you find!!Roger

Smell isn't coming from being rich and for there to be as much smell as he seems to indicate, a leak would have to be a pretty good drip or stream of fuel--The blow thru on overlap is what is significant and probably comes from mis matched parts in the engine build---I'd like to see the cam specs and where its timed at--

I checked for direct gas leaks onto the floor,and I don't see any.
I guess it might be from the fuel cell gas cap,or somewhere?
I'm gonna have a reputable Rod shop near Me check it out on monday{TRI-C hot rods}
Thanks Everyone for your help and I'll keep You all posted.NICE GUYS FINISH FIRST.....

Your supercharged Corvette had almost nothing similar to this rod--the vett was electronic fuel injected into the port just as the intake valve was open--
this engine has 2 carbs on top of a 6:71 and the overly rich fuel jetting is adding fuel to all the air that the blower is drawing thru the carbs and at slow speeds with little exhaust backpressure and scavaging by the headers, a good amount will be blown thru the cylinder on the camshaft overlap portion of the valve timing. At idle, time(as in tic,tic,toc) is pretty relavant to this as at high rpm its insignificant) 600 rpm is 10x as much time as 6000rpm) and the gas rich mixture will flow thru the 2 open valves into the exhaust and stink up your garage.
Now your carb system may be totally off as for jetting and powervalve sizes/settings and maybe if calibrated better might solve your fuel smell, but it remains that a supercharged engine can and will pump air/fuel thru the cylinder on the valve overlap portion of the exhaust/intake stroke--

About the only thing good I could say about Big Al is that I understand there is a strip club called Big Al's Toy Box in Peoria Illinois--Never been there.

I won't comment about another engine builders specs--If it had just been a CAM company card----
However--you can lay out the specs on a piece of graph paper and see the area of total overlap(the .006 numbers)
The lobe separation is pretty decent but not knowing anything about his cams profiles------
But I do hope you can see what I meant about both valves being open blowing thru raw mixture and that att an idle/low rpm that you will blow lots ---

Jerry, a side note that I really appreciate your explanation as it has really helped me understand more about why my idle exhaust "smells rich" but performs good, even on my naturally aspirated engine.
George,
Look through your paperwork from Big Al's and see if he gave you the cam card from the grinder. I got both the Comp Cams card and the builders printouts with mine. If he did not give you the cam card he should have it in his files.Roger

According to his website, Big Al uses CompCams in the engines he offers. But looking through my CC catalogue, I don't see those specs anywhere.
It also states that all turnkey engines are run on the dyno, so one would normally assume the ignition and carbs are dialed in. Let us know what Tri-C discovers.Last edited by rumrumm; 02-10-2012 at 11:01 AM.
