wiper arms. How do they come off
I'm trying to pull the wiper arms off my '51 Chevy so I can put new 1's on ( old do not hold tight to the window ). I can see the little clip, but what do I use to release it? I tried a small screwdriver from the side, but I can't get it under the clipYou don't know what you've got til it's gone

If I remember, You lift the arm, slide the clip out, then let the arm back down so the tension of the arm captures the clip, then you just wiggle the arm up off the splines of the shaft.

I don't have one, but I've seen this wiper arm removal tool referenced before - A192, Removal Tool, Windshield Wiper Arm Don't know if you can find it generic or not...Roger

on them there all about the same till late 70s till now i think ford van and truck started the hold down clip and pull arm all the way up them slid the clip up on arm body let arm come back some then it rested on clip . pull up or rock it abit till it comes right off. the older cars you can put the arms on any were as there is no keyed spot on arm and wiper shaft. they have been that way for many years .that snap off tool should work but you can take them off with a big screw driver and a wood paint sticks as shims .pick up on arm there is a tin flat clip on some come along the side of wiper shaft with a1/2 flat blade of a big screw driver set paint sticks down on finsh carefully pry up then try not send wiper in the air.i taken many off this way before the tool.tools works better . i seen the new guy at the shop i worked at he did not check that the wipers were in park turned them on and drag the wipers a cross a fresh painted hood .i use to put tape on the wind shield were the wipers sat in park so they were clocked right. its a pisser when they hit the cowl or hood or A piller when fresh paints on the car. that is one of them one time deals that you learn not to do againLast edited by pat mccarthy; 06-25-2012 at 04:53 PM.

I was using just a small screwdriver, so I think the larger screwdriver and the paint stick will work good... Tape on the window is a good idea. It's easiest to get at the clip with the wipers in the straight up position. knowing me, I'd put them back on as if it was the parked position and I'd end up with a headache. Of course the wipers don't work but In NYS they have to be there, in good condition and tight to the window, but it's not required for them to be able to sweep.. I'm just going to use Rainx..
Thanks All.You don't know what you've got til it's gone
