    9" ford freewheeling

I pulled the axles from a 9" to have a looksee at the seals, when i slid them back in and tightened everything the axles just freewheel like they aren't engaging in anything.
the rear has an open carrier, non posi, unknown mileage - i assume a lot.
    I didn't swap the axles.
I can spin each axle while manual trasmission is in gear.
With tranny out of gear i can rotate pinion while holding each axle.
I look inside from axle tube and all looks ok.
When i pulled the axles they just came out without strain and i didn't hear anything drop out of place inside the housing.
What could be wrong with the carrier to cause this?
    Thanks, oj

After having this thing apart and back together 3 times - including the drum brakes on the one side - and messing with another open carrier to see how it works i have come to the comclusion that that is a normal way for the rear to work.
Excuse me whilst i go off and hit my head with a hammer.
    Thanks oj

I just wanna know how you're holding each axle plus turning the pinion???

Do you have the elusive 3rd arm/hand from the center of your chest??

I've heard that I really needed to get me one and I agree (in concept) that it would be very handy at times!

Nope, no 3rd arm but i have a handy tail....

Actually, this is a tubbed '69 camaro. The pinion is only a couple feet from the axle flange. That also explains my consternation about the rear - who would have a tubbed bigblock, 4speed car with monster tires and a single-track rear? It isn't what i expected for sure.

My first thought as I read it, too. Might consider an Eaton/Detroit TruTrac - they're the closest thing to a locker that remains very friendly on the street, very strong, and no clutches to wear out. http://www.eaton.com/Eaton/ProductsS...als/PCT_221471
