    battery trouble

    51 chevy pickup - 350 sbc

I have some very nice carpet covering the battery trapdoor. Therefore if I ever need a jump-start or a battery charge it will be mucho difficult to get to it. would it be possible to connect the pos battery cable to the pos pole from the alternator and the neg side to any neg spot?

To charge it but not to jump it.
If it's not broke, fix it anyway.

You could add a lead from the battery connection at the starter to an isolated terminal somewhere under the hood. At least that way you could use a wire large enough to handle the current (amp) load. Plus getting jumper cables to grab that small connector behind the alternator would be clumbsy I think.

Moroso and a number of other companies make jumper and charging terminals that are direct wired to the battery posts, then mounted in a more accessible location then the battery.

Here's a link to them in the Summit web site, many other companies sell them too.

Used them on drag cars for years when the battery is buried someplace in the trunk.

Thanks guys. I like a clean firewall and that is why I prefer the battery in it's original place. I have ordered a terminal for the positive lead that I will mount on the firewall above the starter. Then I can charge and jump using that terminal and a nearby ground.

With that "Nice carpet" over the battery, how do you do the maintenance on the connections? When a cable corrodes up and loses connection, your carpet is gonna take a beating when she quits just outside of Resume Speed , Oklahoma in the middle of the night.

I only have 310 miles on her. If I do find trouble outside Resume Ok. I'll just drop the battery down STAINLESS DROP DOWN BATTERY BOX photo by BIGCHEVY3600 | Photobucket and make the repairs. That way I won't mess up my "nice carpet".

I hope John Brian wasn't offended by my banter with Charlie! Just havin' a bit of fun at Charlies expense! And I guess at times "we" are a bunch of crotchety (relatively) old men..

So, JB.. I'll trust all is well and hope You and Your Family enjoy the Holiday Season.
