how big a cam can a crate motor take without springs ,heads or higher comp. right now I have a 300hp crate, not knowing what pistons were used I'm a little nervous about puttinf money into too big of a cam but would like one bigger than what was provided. Is there anyway to determin what I have by the eng. numbers on a crate motor or the numbers on the heads?

I'd guess you'd be safe with one of the "RV" cams, but most of the cam makers will tell you which of their cams will work with stock equipment. Even the listings at the websites like Jegs and Summit will give you this information.
Hope it helps.

Depends on whether you want a cam that will compliment your engine and improve it's performance, or just something that sounds kewl...... Comp Cams has a program on their web site called Cam Quest 6 that is a free download and quite accurate with it's recommendations.Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, Live for Today!
