    Question Wheel Cylinder Advice

I hopped in the Mustang last weekend and backed out the driveway. Whoa whoa whoa . . . NO BRAKES. The pedal went straight to the floor. I pulled it back in, popped the hood and took the cover off the mstr cylndr. Dry as a bone!! I found that the driver side, rear wheel cylinder was leaking.

I'll pick a couple wheel cylinder kits and some brake fluid and do both rears. It looks pretty straight foward to do. Is there any tricks or advice that would help? Thanks guys.

It's not worth trying to rebuild them. Often times the rust is too sever to hone out. Buy new cylinders. They're not that expensive and they will save you a lot of time.

I agree. Really more cost effective to replace the cylinder with new or factory rebuilt with a stainless sleeve / liner. Also a good time to inspect / replace weak brake lines.

Ditto on the rebuild, just replace them. You didn't say what year mustang, but older stang parts are cheap. Consider replacing the hardware ( springs) and shoes while you're at it.

Education is expensive. Keep that in mind, and you'll never be terribly upset when a project goes awry.

It's a 65'. I ended up doing the rebuild kits. The cylinders were in pretty good shape. It took minimal time cleaning them up. I spent more time watchin' the football games and drinkin' beer then anything else. HAA!!! It was my first brake job so it was fun to learn. And I think what I learned is I don't want to do drums again!!! Nah, just kidding. A lot of parts but by the time I got to the second one, I felt like I had a pretty good grasp on it. Anyway job, done. 12 pack of suds, done. 49ers going to the Super Bowl, DONE. It was a good day. Again, thanks for the input guys.
