Buying a used Saginaw steerign box

I'm looking at buying a used Saginaw power steering box.

Is there a way to test the box when it is off the vehicle to verify it is not worn and not in need of a rebuild?

    Thanks

Put pliers to the input shaft, rock it back and forth. If if moves in and out, It's worn.

    Careful of the splines

The "kits" for them are just seals & bearings, not the "wear" parts (gears on the shafts), and the adjustment is to take up the play, ensure it travels freely throughout the range, back off 25 degrees to eliminate any binding and secure the adjuster. Buying an old used box is risky. They wear in the middle, and if you adjust to remove the slack in the middle will bind when turned. Have you looked at new/rebuilt? JEGS lists a bunch - Borgeson Saginaw Steering Boxes - JEGS and Summit has some too - http://www.summitracing.com/search?k...0saginaw&dds=1 Your local NAPA (or favorite box store) probably has them too if you can give them a make/model/year reference?

    Thanks for the help.
The part looked clean with no leaks and was still hooked up to the pump.
Paid $80 and even if it needs rebuild I'm ahead of cost because core charge alone is $135 for a remanuf one from Oreilly's.
