New key programming
Can you use you scanning tool to program a new key or do you have to get a key programmer. I was just curious, since both tool's use the OBD II cable to connect to the car's computer. I have found a nice Key Programmer I like but before I drop money on something I don't really need, I want to see what you guys thought or knew about it.
Here is a video below of a guy using a key programmer, that Key programmer runs about $450 bucks. How to program Dodge Smart Key 2008~2012 with SKP-100 SKP-900 - YouTube
Thanks for any input.

$450. that's a bunch of bucks what dose the dealer charge? That seems to me to be something a dealer or locksmith would need (have)Charlie

I can't answer the question about the OBDII vs Dedicated Programmer, but I wondered the same thing from a different slant. How many vehicles of the applicable range in years do you have, and how often have you needed to have new keys programmed? Since they started this "smart key" thing we've never yet had the need to have a new one linked to a vehicle, but maybe we're not the norm. A $450 tool for something as unique as programming key fobs seems like a business tool, as opposed to something a guy would buy for the tool box.Roger

Well the dealer wants a little over $400 bucks to make one key.
If I had two key's which I don't, I could do a trick that would program a new key.
But since I only have one key I need to have a key programmer to make another key.
I can buy a key on line from Ikeyless for $110 bucks the dealer wants $250 bucks for just
the key. Then another $150 to program the key, and $50 more for something else I don't remember.
what that was for. Here's a video where another guy explains how to make your own key if you have 2 keys,
he also talks about how much the dealers want to make them for you. I got my own price from my dealer
where I live and locksmiths here are about the same price, with their mark up.

We had to have a key cut for our Calais.
So I went to Max Pennington's Auto City (the Holden dealer,) and got one cut for a bit over NZ$300.
A day or four later I was chatting to the office girl at Arthur and Low's; and she told me she'd had one for her Fairmont cut at The Mad Irish Cobbler's for NZ$150.
So when I needed another key for another car, the Berlina, that's where I went.
And yep; that's what he charged me.
So it may pay to shop around!johnboy

It'd be nice if the company that sells the programmer could tell you who has them in your area..... I think I'd spend an hour or two calling around to small, independent shops in the area.Last edited by rspears; 02-20-2014 at 09:50 PM.

When my wife got her 2008 Dodge Caliber back in 08, I wanted a key that would just open the door and start the motor. I didn't want a FOB that could lock/unlock/panic button etc. I asked the dealer about this and he said they could make a key to do what I needed and it was $57.

Curt, you could cut the chip out of the head of the key, then remove the steering column cover and epoxy the pill to something close to ignition switch. Then you can use plain jane keys. Thats the trick they use for aftermarket remote start systems.

Wow that's pretty smart HWORRELL. Once I told the wife how much it was gonna cost she got pissed.
Because when we bought the truck we told the dealer we needed two key's and they kept saying they would get us one made.
Then after everything goes thru and we get the truck we ask about our other key and they say ok go around to the shop
and they will make you one. Then he proceeds to say but you have to pay for it first before they will make it. WHAT!!!
Yep they pulled a fast one on us, so for the last 2 years we have only had one key for the truck.
So yesterday after I told the wife how much it was gonna cost, she said get me Chrysler corporations number, so I did.
She called them yesterday afternoon and told them we were looking at buying this Challenger SRT the other day but our better
judgement told us not to because of what the dealer pulled on us. Then she told them we wouldn't be buying anymore cars from them
because the dealers could not be trusted. They called us back last night and said they were buying us another key to go down to the dealer and he will make it.
Who ever heard of buying a car from the dealer and only getting one key. That's just not good business.
