Possibly a quick stop by your local chevy dealer and ask the parts man what the tranny dipstick looks like, sounds like yours has come apart somehow. Is there a check engine or service engine light showing? If not your probly safe for the time being.

Maby Chevy never put one in the car. On some newer Cavaliers they tend to forget to put little things in like that cause they come off the assembly line so fast and, arn't inspected very good afterwords. Chevy may have never put a dipstick in it purposly, like my brothers truck ( '91 Ford Ranger ) doesent have a filler opening so, you have to stick a funnel in the dipstick tube to fill it. Being your car probably sensor for low tranny fluid, they probably figure, you add fluid when the light comes on. Heck you probably have a warning light for low windshield washer fluid.

We won't have to worry bout that truck NE more, he was given the wrong tranny fluid by his girlfriends mother, he was given MORAR brand tranny fluid( specific for Mopar Vehicles ), then he went up a steep 4X4 trail ( old firetower road ) and because he didn't want to use his brakes, he shifted it into 2 then locked it up in 4 low, all of these put together, obviously turned the tranny into a Kentucky Fried Tranny, goes in every gear cept reverse.

angeloftheroad, You're freind was correct. On the right side of the tranny (passenger side) You will see what looks like a little bolt sticking out. I do believe it will take an 8mm wrench, whay you need to do is have the car up high enough to get to it, but the car MUST be level. The red cap is the fluid fill only start the car up and let it idle in park, now u might need 2 people one to add the fluid and the other to take out the bolt. The tranny is full when the Atf just starts to trickle out. I know it's a pain, but that is the only way to check the fluid. If the ATF is discolord or smells burnt it might be a good time to flush it. That should be performed by a qualified Auto Technision. I hope this helps good luck and remember to use jackstands.

That really sucks! Sometimes this "So Called" modern science is pretty unsensable.
